Variable cache location

At least 5 times a day, due to the low amount of space on my C:\ drive, I have to clear my cache in C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Second Life\cache because if I don't, SL crashes when it can't store any more data on my full C:\ drive.

Some may ask "Well why is your C:\ drive so filled up?". It's because I don't use it for storage. It's meant for the Windows registry and other small files. If I were able to move it to my Z:\ drive, which has over 100GB of space, the problem would be fully resolved.

Now, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had problems with this, and even if I am, SL's cache system shouldn't have a preset non-variable location.

What I propose is that the user is able to select within preferences where SL stores it's cache or at least that SL store the cache within the folder it's located in rather than in a different folder on a different drive.

This would be rather nice, I'd love to be able to store the SL cache on my raid 0 array for performance reasons in a more convient way. Currently, the only way to do this is to make a NTFS junction to a directory on another volume.

I wish I knew how to do that.

Look for my post about halfway down.

Just make sure you understand everything before you do it, I take no responsibility for broken FAT tables. ;)

You have to download the whole resourse kit, install it, and linkd will be part of it..

So head to :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en

Download the full resoucekit to install it, you can try the a google search for just linkd.exe and see what comes up, but because of virus, etc..etc..I feel better downloading right from the source (Microsoft)..

When I try to run this in Windows XP Pro SP2 (start/run/ putting in the command line suggested in the wikki modified for my directories) it just gives me the error message "windows cannot find "D:\Program" Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." =/

EDIT:

Ok so now I got it to run but it appears to duplicate my files into both directories, rather than only writing them to the specified new directory?

Hmm - no, that means that things are working as intended ;-).

(I just did this for similar reasons as the OP - I run a dual-boot rig and 'C:' drive space is always at a premium)

The files are really resident on the 'other' drive (the non-'C:' drive), they just _look_ like they're in two places at once - there aren't two copies though, just one. And this is just what you want - SecondLife looks in its 'cache' folder and puts/finds things there as it would expect, but the files are really being placed on the other drive, where there is more room.

So, it sounds as if you are good to go...

Have fun! 8-)
