I posted a feature suggestion awhile ago about limiting auto-delete time, however, I didnt want to hijack that thread with another, possibly different request.
I hate the auto-delete timer. Completely. Utterly. Entirely. With every fibre of my being.
I think its an unintuitive feature, for a world as dynamic as Second Life.
Today, while testing out the GSLR train, and demoing it to a few people, including Athos himself, pieces of it started to dissappear right before our eyes.
I was completely outraged! We had just taken a moment to stop traveling and stand to talk to each other, when poof! The engine was gone... then poof! The coal-cart was gone, then poof! The very car we were standing on was gone.
GSLR train cars rely on each other, if one car derezzes, the cars behind that car are stuck at their positions until a new train car to replace the one derezzed is inserted.
If I were to script a vehicle that lets its passengers stand while riding, that vehicle is liable to derez at any time its not traveling over known, safe land.
I propose....
I dont know. This time around I dont have any ideas on how to fix this 'feature'. Im clueless as to why this autodelete was even implimented, let alone able to be set to something as insane as 1-5 minutes.
SL is about creation and collaboration, not competition or exclusion. The auto-delete timer is one example of how the world is changing to favor the latter.

I endorse this product/service. I'll restate my interests: Make all of SL build and script friendly. Perhaps there could be an option to "ignore" someone's prims just like there is for chat, even using the same dialog so there's no additional UI burden. Or don't de-rez an object if either the owner or a member of the group is nearby (10 m?). This would eliminate the vehicle problem, although it doesn't help the bird flocks or other free-range objects. --Riptide

Actually, it seems like the auto-return/delete could still be plenty effective with a high minimum time (like 60 minutes or so). It would seem to me that there are very few benefits to a return time of 1 minute, and plenty of problems. Don't remove the button to return all "other" objects, just set a minimum limit on the automatic version. That way, no one has to wait if Johnny McGriefypants rezzes 5 billion turtles on your land, but vehicles and autonomous birds and such can still pass through without threat of being deleted.
Also, make vehicles that currently have someone sitting on the non-deletable/returnable by others. Allow normal use of eject/ban no matter what, and the only purpose left for deleting a sat upon non-owned vehicle would be to be annoying.
I think both of those changes could be made without opening ourselves up to griefing situations, couldn't they?

Isnt the track completely on Land owned by the builders of the train? Ifso, then where did the autodelete come in?

From: someone Originally posted by Devlin Gallant Isnt the track completely on Land owned by the builders of the train? Ifso, then where did the autodelete come in? Well, yes, but in this particular demo, I was running the train off the track, using an all-terrain vehicle script. However, the purpose behind the creation of this thread, was that confortable collaboration suffered, no one wants to be 'forced' to remain seated just so the vehicle doesnt derez

On this subject, I rezzed ten of my birds today in Maverick. Within 15 minutes, five of them had been returned to my inventory. An hour later, when I logged off, eight of them had. I don't expect any of them to still be in-world when I log on tomorrow.

Autodelete exists so that people don't have to manually take action to clean up stuff left by others. This is especially useful for bullets etc. that may have wound up on your land, particularly if you have outside scripting off.
Try to keep in mind that you aren't owed land/prim use rights by other people, even temporarily. You DO get airspace rights above a certain altitude, above which their access controls and no-outside-scripts permissions have no effect. However, if they don't want you to park a train on their land, even if it's just for five minutes, I don't think it's too unreasonable for you to respect that. In fact if even one person stays seated, the object is immune to autodelete.
In this situation I think it's better to ask the land owner if maybe they'd be willing to bump up autodelete to five or ten minutes, or keep the train from straying off the tracks.
