I just thought of this idea by the "network" sugestion of to make sure no p2p is running. Why not add a function in the clients where loading objects and textures function almost like some p2p clients where what you have in your cache is "shared" to everyone in the region so where the stored textures and whatnot arn't comeing from just the SL servers but from everyone? maybe have it function similar to how torrents work? Something like that could potentially free up bandwidth there at LL so users in general would have everything rez a lot faster.
to expand it further there wouldhave to be a network option with a slider to control how much upstream is used for this feature, and sl would have to institute a minimum, and the actual upstream being the maximum, otherwise those who stream audio would run into problems.

We could always kick the 20k of bots offline somehow? It's the weekend and as usuall SL can't support more than 50k of residents and bots online. Our assert server is being hammered by bots teleporting at 23 sims per minute. Please vote for http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2289

What if you are with an ISP who has low limits on both speed and amount of bandwidth??, Im sure theres more than a few already who run close to their allowed transfer limit, An upload amount would kill them .
The kick the bots solution sounds like a better alternative to me.

With SL being open source, I'm not sure I like this idea.. Seems to have some griefer potential.

From: Sindy Tsure With SL being open source, I'm not sure I like this idea.. Seems to have some griefer potential. I guess the biggest issue would be that this would, at least theoretically, make it possible to find out from which IP addresses other users are connecting from. Having connections to people in other sims would likely make the system work better and make it harder to match IP addresses with individual users. Verifying that the texture data received is correct is not a problem. That's a long since solved problem. You just need to imitate what the better Bittorrent clients do to weed out clients sending garbage. They do it well enough that you'd be hard pressed to realize it happens. Anyway, something like this should be completely voluntary feature you can activate for better performance in exchange for some of your upload bandwidth. Many people are still on connections with limits on how much they're allowed to upload/download.
