Should the MPAA NC-17 Movie Rating be a basis for restricted content?

The latest blog post on restricted content confuses the issue again, by referring to both the ESRB Adult Only rating for software games and the R rating for movies. This is an inconsistency, as it is the NC-17 movie rating that most corresponds to th AO game rating.

The MPAA, at filmratings.com , has a fair bit of information on the ratings system. Furthermore, it is fair to say that movie ratings, in the U. S., are more familiar to most people than computer game ratings. Specific rules for the MPAA ratings can be found at:

http://www.mpaa.org/Ratings_Rules.pdf

Poll Question: Should the NC-17 rules be the starting point for deciding what SL activities should be restricted to verified adults? This means in the sense of guidelines that can evolve, not rules etched in stone.

(Apologies to those from other countries who are used to different ratings systems. I had to pick one as a starting point.)

Ummm ... maybe ... if I had ANY idea what that was in this country!

*EDIT* Well ... in the UK someone of 15 can see simulated sexual acts in a film and at 16 they can legally go and do it.

Then again ... they can go do it at 16 and not see an explicit version till they are 18. Course they can make their own explicit home movies ... it is just as barmy as the vagueness that has to surround this issue for compliance sakes.

Can't be a poll question, because the thread isn't a poll.

But if it were, I'd vote "No"...because I don't think there should BE restricted content, or any sort of rating system beyond Teen Grid/Adult Grid and the current PG and Mature areas.

That's quite sufficiient.

OK there is one.

I think the line needs to come from Linden. Sorry guys, love you heaps but a yes/no is needed. For instance, people with a sexgen in their house, or whatever?

What about a parcel with restricted access to a few friends, in the air, with security?

It's herding cats again :)

The problem with this is movie standards don't actually have standards. They are so subjective as to be useless. This is a world that would promote junk like "Porkies" and offer the kiss of death to movies like "Last Tango in Paris", "A Clockwork Orange" or "Midnight Cowboy", two of the three are always listed int he best movies of all time.

So, no, I don't have much hope for a Hollywood style system, because Hollywood's system is just meant to give the little jackbooted clique a way to stifle people they deem unworthy to step onto their red carpet.

I, frankly, feel the same way about verification here, honestly. I think LL is just trying to make SL more presentable to all those business interests they are wooing onto "the grid", and this is a way of starving off the adult industry in SL.

Personally ... I am still stuck on, when I registered,
I gave my name, my age, my real address, my real phn #, my real CC twice! even
and *clicked* Agreed,
boughten virt land in Mature sims and observe the behaviors of sim specified content,
so! why do I have to do anymore?!

Sad but true, logging in yesturday, the new TOS pops up, I begin reading the jargon
and hit Agree half way through it, while we debate and decipher, most of us will comply,
"1st born to login?" yes yes! *click click* "Give blood every 3rd Monday to RP HP needy?" sure sure!
Just let me at my Inventory!!!

Now I got to wonder if the nude dancing at my home, outside,
makes my Tango pose ball a naughty thing?! *tch*

Forgive the tangent, but why did this wind up under Feature Suggestions when I originally posted it in Resident Answers?

Hmm let's see, you asked a question so it was in the right forum.

Maybe Strife's hand slipped and this should have been moved to current version feedback?
