Greetings,
Just as a little preamble and background, I had a little group of people whom attempted to make an entertainment area, with full weather, a theatre, a nightclub, a arcade (had a working chess board), the start of a rollar coaster, ,etc. We had the interest to bring something lacking in SL, something to do besides talking and building, by having multi-player games, etc. This idea was brought crumbling down by the weight of over 10k/week of taxes.
Thus one would conclude I would be bitter about the tax situation. Well, I was at first, but now, I must say I agree with it. It is a necessary evil, and I don't think the tax system itself needs to be changed.
I have heard a lot of complaints about taxes, and groups being able to stay afloat. I have heard people wanting some sort of tax break for groups. I understand the weight of group projects as far as tax burdons, but I disagree there should be a break.
Resources in this Second world of ours is limited. I feel the current system of taxes is a fair way to distribute the resources. I do have some issues with the focus of the rating system being so strrong on socializing, but I digress.
I don't see why a group of people should get any different tax situation than an individual. If groups get tax brreaks, it takes resources away from those independent individuals. Typically what I hear from the groups is "With these taxes, we can expand, we can't build on". That, my friends, ,is reality. We must all, individuals and groups, live within our current means, as I harshly learned.
If a group wishes to expand their area, the key is not to force resources from others, via tax breaks. The solution is for the groups to pull in more people to give up their resources. I heard outcries of "Freedom" by giving tax breaks, but this is not freedom. This is forcing others to give up part of their share of resources. IF a group wants to expand, they must expand their resources, like all others, via more people joining up, sales of products/services, or just plane old donations.
My suggestions are two fold:
1) There be some sort of "contribution" settings. Have a system set up so that people can pledge a certain amount to a group/area on a weekly basis. This will allow those whom wish to freely give up a fraction of their resources to be contributed to a group, but not forced. Have this amount automatically extracted at tax time. Perhaps even have a general fund people can contribute to that can be distributed evenly to the registered groups/area.
2) For groups/areas to educate people on the burdon of large area taxes and to actively petition for people to give up part of their resources to the groups they like.
This is fair. This is freedom to give your resources. Don't force people to give up resources by aloting extra to certain people via "tax breaks".
