Textures and Permissions A Solution?

All objects in the world can be protected if the creator so chooses with permissions. At the very least their object can only be sold once. With textures this isnt even close.

Textures are vulnerable to abuse. Since full permissions need to be set for the buyer to be able to use them as they were intended.

While most respect the creators wishes and do not sell or give them away there are the ones that do. Finding this an easy way to make money off the works of others.

SOLUTION:

A check box needs to be made that is specific to textures. When checked this would only permit the texture to be transferred if applied to a prim.

I have tested this and even if the prim is set with full permissions the texture cannot be extracted from the prim to be used again or sold.

The creator of the prim still has the right to use the textures over, therefore not denying the buyer of the exclusive rights to the textures and its intended use.

I hope that the Lindens will consider this a serious issue and try to resolve the problems we are now facing.

I agree, Drift.

Textures with the permissions removed are pretty much useless unless you're building something you never plan to sell or give away.

Something needs to be done. Drift's idea, if implimentable, sounds ideal.

Yes that would be a great idea as "no transfer" textures are a pain. One can't even make a gift for a good friend. And not to mention impares locking down an object.

This is still far too open for abuse. An object with a no-transfer texture applied to it should also become no-transfer. People who sell things like hair textures are completely open to having their work stolen and distributed repeatedly without their consent and there's no way they can prevent it. This is why I sell hair shapes with textures on them already rather than just the texture maps. There are serious dupe loopholes in the current system (which I've reported and don't wish to provide a "how-to" here.)

I understand that Chip. This solution still leaves the original boxes of modify, copy, resell/give away. So that would be up to the creator.

This is specifically directed to a raw texture to prevent the copying/giving away/selling while still retaining a copy of their own.
