I want my name changed. I hate the last name digeridoo. Nobody can pronouce it, when people see it they tell me it's spelled wrong and to top it all off JACK DIGERIDOO is pornographic.

Apparantly the policy is that nobody can change their last name. I would like to suggest that you LIGHTEN UP this policy so people can have more FUN playing this GAME.

I have sent 3 requests to have my name changed but the policy of LL's is NO NAME CHANGES. Why the heck not!

Um. Well you _did_ pick it...

Besides, I don't reckon they'd want a unique surname floating around the system - I think it's kinda nicer just to have "families".

Plus the fact that allowing name changes opens up whole cans of worms where griefer Joe yesterday becomes respectable citizen Dave the other. Plus it's confusing :)

The closest I can think of is didgeridoo, which is the Australian musical instrument... other than that, I'm not sure of any references, pornographic or otherwise.

As for the misspelling, many of the names are alterations of the proper spelling. Take mine for instance... it's pronounced the same way as "Bass Clef" but has no meaning in English the way it's spelled. Don't worry so much. :)

Yes I did pick it but I didnt realize how pornographic it sounded. And it's not like I want a unique last name, I want one of the new ones that new users get to pick from.

I know you were kidding Maxx, but I still want my name changed. My only choice is to get a second account and play with that one, logging into my lifetime digeridoo account to manage land allocation.

I see my own name more than anyone elses up on scoreboards for games I make and It's ruining all my fun. You'd think that's all you'd have to say to get a name change but APPARANTLY the policy is no name changes.

LL is a great company that always listens to their players, they jump through hoops to keep them happy. And then for something as simple as a name change they say NO WAY! AGAINST POLICY!

With the infinate ways we can look, the same name seems reasonable. I had to abandon my original name in order to be Loki. It was long ago and I didnt have a lot invested in my first account, but I didnt want to play with that name, so I took the hit and lost two months on my birthday in my profile. Oh well.

Gee Jack, I like your name.
I always think of the australian musical instrument when I see it.

If your name was:

TouchMy Digeridoo

FeelMy Digeridoo

Iama Digeridoo

LickMy Digeridoo

then I might think of porn.
:)

Don't change it!

Everyonce in a while I think of wanting to change mine but I have reasons for picking it and I'll stick with it.

Maybe if you offer the Lindes some cash they can change it to Dirk Diggler? :P

I would only support name changes if:
- It was limited to lifetime accounts (doesn't make sense otherwise - just make a new account).
- It was limited to one time only.
- Only the last name could be changed, aside from formating issues (capitalization I think should be "fixable" for anyone)
- You had to choose a lastname from the list of available last names.
- Your old name was permanantly listed in your profile.

Essentially lifetime members give up the ability to switch identities at will, in exchange for some extra land and no monthly fees. For this reason I think it reasonable to allow a one time name change as long as accountability is held - their UUID remains the same and their old name is listed in their profile.

I would consider it a lifetime member service.

Why only last name though? And why only once?

The system we currently have isn't prepared to handle any sort of name changes, except for capitalization.

JohnG Linden became John Linden, yet when he logs in, I still see JohnG Linden logging in. They changed his name, but, it caused (causes) issues.

Although it's a nice idea, I'd much rather they simply 'carry over' your subscription to a new account.

My thought has always been that persistence of identity was one of the design aims of unchangable names. As SL is strongly dependent upon the reputation (not ratings) of the avatars one of the constants is that Eggy will always be Eggy and I think it encourages better conduct as a result.

The concept is not unlike PGP "webs of trust" or reputations in RL communities. And yes, multiple accounts do strain the model, but people in RL who want to escape their reputation can (and do) move to (e.g.) Alaska too.

AHA! I wondered about that. I had some flowers that said JohnG Linden but I couldnt find nothing but John Linden on the searches. Way to go "G" on the flowers. :D

Hmm, how is your name pornographic? Or pornophonic, in this case?

If Jack changes his name, I'll be the last Digeridoo left... :(

I feel like Robin William's character Andrew in Bicentennial Man.

But then you'll be unique, LF!
Or maybe just "special". :D

Jack, personally I think your name is great. I have a dirty mind and it's never once occurred to me that your name meant anything pornographic. :)
I think you should be proud to be unique! Very few Digeridoos around.

That being said, if someone REALLY wants to change their name in RL, it's possible -- you go to court and a judge can do it. People often change their surnames when married -- and occasionally for other reasons. Every now and then you'll find a news article about some weirdo who legally changes his name to C3PO Jones or whatever. ;)
It would be nice if you were able to do it in Second Life, but perhaps attach a fee to it, to prevent abuse of the feature. (Or maybe: First name change is free, any additional are US$50?? So as not to penalize someone who wants to become permanently SL-partnered...)

I wonder why their database system is not keyed by a GUID instead of a name? The fact that JohnG still shows up in some data retrievals demonstrates that the database design is not fully normalized.

Optimally, if everything were fully integrated and normalized, it should be just one update statement that "cascades" through the whole system, ie:

UPDATE users set AV_LAST_NAME = "Smith" where AV_GUID = "ddf1032-b73e1-52c33291-9ad24e6712"

I know as changes to the system continue, it's easy to get away from a normalized design, but it's things like this which go to show why it is good to keep yourself discliplined and not take shortcuts along the way which compromise efficient and elegant design principles.
