What about having weather in SL? I would suggest a random weather system with built-in seasons. So in winter it could snow on occassion, in fall the trees would turn color, some rain in spring, lots of sun in summer.

Maybe even the occassional twister or hurricane? If it could be modeled after a real life area, then we could even have weather forecasts.

Personally I believe this would add a level of realism to the environment that I think would spark other creative ideas (umbrella shops, snow gear, ski events, etc.)

Maybe something slightly less elaborate...

Perhaps a cloud density system? Overcast some days, clear the other? If there's a command to measure cloud density, I'm sure there's a way for the Lindens to control it. Savy?

Well, now that there's a trailer park in Immaculate, it's almost bound to attract a few tornados. LOL.

maybe if weather is sent to the client it won't take too much from the server. A simple algorhythm could simply tell the player what kind of weather she/he is experiencing - rain, snow, etc. The client would simply put the weather over top the display... although it'd be kinda weird at the edge of the weather effect. Your friends would say it was raining, but you couldn't see it...

maybe if weather was a property - just an integer - for each plot of land. Then it could be animated by each player's computer.

You have to remember the strain on the client (or server, depending where it happens) inorder to achieve this... You would have to calculate what will block the rain/snow, like roofs, trees, etc., ,or else it will rain/snow,/etc inside, which would be lame.

Indeed. Right now particle effects like mist and smoke go right through walls, which make them less than ideal.

Exactomundo, that's why a simple cloud density and perhaps altitude adjustment globally from day to day would be uber better.
