Odd request I don't know is possible or not, but it would be interesting to see Secondlife's in game IM system linked to an out-of-game IM client as well, allowing for communication while not having the game running. I think it would be an interesting extension to the SL social system. (Obviously, use of the IM would require a SL game account, not just an open system).

This would be very useful. If I'm at work, I can browse the forums but can't interact at all with those in the world.
Lindens, can you adapt Jabber to communicate with SL IM? Obviously this is a post-launch project, but I think it would be neat. And it promotes OSS in a minor way, something I feel the Lindens like doing whenever possible.

I heartily second this idea / request. I've thought about this before too.. how cool it would be to chat with online SL friends while at work or any other situation when I'm not able to enter the game world.
It wouldn't need many elaborate features... as long as it mirrored the in-game IM functionality I think it would be fine.

It's free and it's in reasonably wide use. My web hosting provider (DreamHost) even gives us free private Jabber servers to go with each account if that's any indication.
