Im tired of it in SL.

Shop owners- are you?

When I log in every morning I have atleast 5 notecards/And individual IMs sent to me telling me about a new mall.

If I wanted to rent at your mall- I`d look up classified ads.

This is getting completely unbearable and irritating.

----Fellow Spam-tired resident: "LL should make it illegal. It doesn't benefit them. In fact, they should view it like this. This could potentially take away from their classified sales. why bother paying for an ad when you could just go to every vendor spot you can find and spam anyone who rents"

I would love for LL to take a stand against this and swiftly respond to AR`s of someone spamming.

At the very -least- i`d perhaps like a way to automatically decline notecards from people not on my friends list. That way, it ends up in my trash where it belongs. And if it happens to be something I needed, or I feel like being a trash digger, I can restore it.

If you`ve been affected what do you think about this being a propsal?

There is absolutely no question in my mind that the spam problem in SL is in it's very very earliest stages, and that it will get a thousand times worse over time.

I think LL should start limiting spam *TODAY*, right now! I think spammers who are reported should receive progressively stronger punishments, leading up to permanent banning after a certain number of confirmed reports.

They've already got grey goo fence code that checks propagation of objects by class and family, it seems logical that they could extend that to other assets such as notecards to catch spammers.

I can say this without reservation: If it does eventually get as bad as I fear it will, and LL doesn't put *something* in place, I will be gone. I will not tolerate spam, and as much as I absolutely love SL, that would be enough to drive me away permanently.

I`m definitely with you on this. I need to edit my initial comment as having something to block this mess has MANY downsides and was kind of a "plan B". What I really want is for LL to take an official stance and make this "illegal" in SL.

I would like to be able to AR people who spam and have it looked into by a LL employee and the person take a punishment.

I used to not mind it so much when I was getting maybe 2 a week. But now, in a short period of time, i get about 5 when i first log in, and throughout my time online I aquire more.

Like you, I believe it is going to get WORSE. LL needs to take a stand and ban this, or give us tools to deny things from people we don`t know.

It is getting worse and worse every day. What kills me is these are the people who almost always have nothing but camping traffic, if any traffic at all. So let me get this straight... You've got crap traffic and an ugly azz sim, but you must impose yourself on me, because I need to rent at your overpriced and undertrafficed (is that a word? lol) sim.

The other thing that is currently DRIVING ME BAT CRAP CRAZY is ppl who friend you and then constantly send group invites and group TPs. The kicker about this is even if you remove them from your friend list, your calling card is still in their folder.. so unless they have mercy upon you and delete your card, you have to mute them or you're screwed.

I hate spam of all kind. Unecessary group chats make me want to scream also.

Whew.. that felt good to let it all out.. hehe

It is, without a doubt, getting worse, and it doesn't help that ARs about it are swept under the carpet. Many times I've ARd one girl whose hit and runs drive me absolutely nuts when I'm helping out at Waterhead welcome area, and I've received many replies after a few weeks claiming the AR has been dealt there, but nothing changes. She tps in, drops a scripted object on the floor which detects all avatars present and spams them a landmark and notecard to her freebie reselling store. If you tp out and return, it detects your arrival and hits you with the same spam again. It is also clear that the scripted object is storing the names of avatars because later, we all get invited to the group for her store.

Auto-return is set at five minutes, and guess what happens when the object is returned? She does another hit and run. Several times an hour. This individual's Second Life must consist of constantly travelling around infohubs with object create/scripting enabled, just so she can spam the naive and make money off stuff other people made.

LL explicitely prohibits spam in the ToS. Just AR every spammer you encounter. Eventually, if they get flooded with spam ARs all day, the Lindens are bound to get the message.

I`ll definitely begin to AR people.

And I hope everyone can do their part, hopefully we can stop this.

When you run a rental business tenants friend you ALL of the time, why? So they can easily contact you for help.

Thanks for coming out, though. :)

Thanks for your reply Jesse ;) That's exactly why I have to accept these friend offers. I never do, unless it's a renter or business associate.

That reason I can understand, but in that case they shouldn't be spamming you. If they are, kick them off their plot.

I also hate receiving group invites from ppl I don't even know. I won't join your group if I have never been to your place or don't even know you, so don't bother.

Shop owners are just as guilty of this as anyone else.

Buy something, or even just visit and a day later you suddenly get a group invite, notecard and landmark drops, event invitations, scripted IMs, etc.

Probably less useful for malls, but in addition to the AR, tp over and look whether it's rented land or a private sim and complain to the actual land owner (if different from the store/mall owner).

Spamming is covered in "Disturbing the Peace" of the Community Standards btw.

spamming attacks
06-08-2007 07:12
I was in a club last night having a conversation when we were interuppted by another person, who wouldnt leave. Then a monkey came over and sent me a spamsheet and it flooded my computer and locked it up. I had to re- boot my computer to get back in. I think there should be no warnings. Just ban the account. The TOS is their warning. Linden should sign up people as volunteer police to walk around and control these people. I have found that most of these trouble makers are from the freebie accounts, but i wont go into that here. If LL doesnt do something about spammers soon, I'm am going to leave. I come here to have fun.

It would be nice if your offline IMs went somewhere othere than spamming you at log on.

Same thing with all the notices and votes.

Maybe you could query to access them if you chose a particular setting.

Although I am sure im not asked as often as the OP I am invited to rent from a Mall a couple times a week. And the spam notices from the Live Music group is really annoying (keep thinking of quiting that group =/)

The barage is bad becuase also when you first log on its offline ims from your freidns then online oens from people happy to see you on. Its liek logging in with a hangover or something.

So a way to make all that stuff NOT barrage you on log in , but instead when YOU want to go look at it, would be much better than the current system.

Add in maybe some sort of filter - Like Never receive Land Marks , or automatically delete all offline messages with the word "Mall" in them.

Aargh! I hear you. I keep quitting because so many group notices go to email .. but then I keep joining again because obviously, I want to be notified of live music events taking place when I've got time to kill. Then I forget to leave before logging off.

That group is a double edged sword.

This isn`t about people instructing us how to run our community. Its about LL being more strict to stop the spam NOW before it gets way too worse/Giving us better ways to guard ourselves against it.

Besides, what KiKi said about the group SPAM is a bit of a different situation. This isnt about people sending group chats. This is about people sending to you "junk mail" you did not ask for..constantly...

Same, that`s beyond annoying. The last store I bought a shirt from the guy invited me to his group. If I wanted to join a group- I`d look them up and join. I hate unwanted group invites.

We get enough spam with group IMs when we don't want them and stuff. I've started getting this too, my products aren't exactly general consumption that anyone will like, and yet I have malls asking me to rent in them even though anyone with half a brain could see my stuff won't sell in them, it's just not the right place.

Besides, your own chunk of land somewhere and a few well-worded classified ads are much better for getting sales than any texture saturated mall with 5fps. And tend to be cheaper too these days.
Though a nice themed mall is sometimes good too, but vendors will come to you for those kinds of places if you just make sure people are able to find you when looking. Force it upon them and you just create hostitility :)

So I agree, something should be done.
