Clock and Time Rant

this is just needlessly confusing. the event calendar on the website is PST in 12 hour format, the event calendar in game is PST in 24 hour format and the purple event dots on the map are my local time in 12 hour format. the cherry on top is that nowhere in the interface is there a clock telling what time it is in the game (assumedly PST). would it kill you to standardize the time formats to all be PST in 24 hour format and put a 24 hour PST clock in the bottom corner of the screen? or even better, since the client knows enought to convert the map times to my local time why don't you just give me local time for everything? and put a tiny little script on the website that converts the event calendar times to my local time too.

This is surprisingly reasonable idea.

I think they aren't translating event times into everyone's local time because players will inevitably discuss times for events, and then confusion will rein. They have to pick a standard time, just as you mention, Kissmi, and use that for everyone.

I think they should add a clock with the current game time to the UI, and if you click it, it shows your local time for a few seconds, then goes back to game time. That way it can do the math for you, but it normally displays everything the same. In fact, anywhere in the interface that displays a time should be clickable to see your local version for a moment.

And the translated time should change font color or style for the few seconds it displays your local time, so it is visually distinct from normal game-time times.

I think it would be a good idea to put a clock on the in game event tab itself. That way, time is right there with the events and you wont have to look at it all the time, only when needed. Just so you know, there are clocks on the telehubs.

Does anyone want to make us a digitial clock that we can attach to the back of our avatar's head? That way we can see it when we're playing. :)

lol great suggestions everyone. i have to stick to my guns about the local time thing though. how about two time columns in the events window, one for PST and one for local time? dammit i'm lazy and i don't want to convert times!

Heck, make a pair of wings that flash the time in military. :D

However, the idea about 2 time columns is an interesting one.

I have a little watch in my shop for $10.

It'll give ya the time, via chat if you say "time" (current PST time).

It'll convert miltary times into normal time for ya if you do: "#miltime xx:yy", where xx=hrs yy=minutes. eg: "#miltime 22:18" returns "That's 10:18 PM!"

It has an alarm you can set to a time (PST, which is what it's based on). So it cookoo's ya when that time arrives, like the other stuff, it's via chat "alarm xx:yy" sets it for xx hour, yy minute.

If ya want one, it's in my shop in Blue in the SE corner (near the teleplopper/stage). Upstairs on a little table.

no offense Bosozoku but i think this is really something the Lindens should provide. i don't think the solution is ever single person in the game giving you $10. you might disagree... :)

Well it's not _strictly_ neccesary to buy one at all - a noob with a few day's scripting under his belt could probably write a basic model easily - they even give you the time conversion code in the scripting docs :)

well while they're making the changes you all mention above, which I agree are sorely missing, then can they also add a column to the events list that tells you how long til an event.

E.g.

Event Event Time Local Time Time to Event
Bingo 12.00 PST (20:00 GMT) 1hr 23m

Yes, I'm lazy. But that doesnt mean it isnt a good idea.

:D

I think I am repeating myself here- I want the time displayed on the event tab. NOW!

I am no fan of watches attatched to me - RL and SL. I have enough scripted attachments to my AV as is.

Don't need to carry a watch, Matina, you just IM Boso and ask him for the time. His time is better than anyone else's time - even Lindens could IM Boso so they know when to announce what... :)

No one's required to buy my watch, in fact I think I've only sold one so far, and it's been available for a few weeks now. :p

The only reason I made it was because a while back some people posted that 24-hour format times, and PST conversions confused them. So I made a little watch that not only tells the time, but will do the 24-hr conversions for ya (which is just a very basic math function). Then I tossed in an alarm as I thought some might like that to alert them for whatever reason.

As well I sell a "timezoner" wall clock (analog), that is user-configurable to display whatever time zone you want. Hrm maybe I should make watches in all the time zones, so the mathematically challenged (of which I am) don't have to think.

I don't doubt that the UI will one day have a clock built in, and probably (eventually) with conversions to one's local time zone. But until that time I have a little watch which might be of utility to some.
