I propose that the next update include an option to apply a much thicker skin on one's avatar than has been previously available.
People tend to focus on the outward appearance of the skin and details like pubic hair or freckles, but this is (rather literally), "navel gazing" IMO.
Constant problems with whiny avatars complaining about being "offended" and crying about banning this person or that, can be COMPLETELY AVOIDED by those who wish to avail themselves of the new thicker skin.
I further propose that this "thicker skin" be either oily or feathered on the anterior side, so as to have the offenses more easily run off (like water).

Hahaha I'm confused.
Are you suggesting we tar and feather those who would otherwise be banned... haha I love it.

Can we have a thick skull option too? That might be nice for my avatar.

From: Dianne Mechanique I was reaching for the "like water off a ducks back" analogy, but it didn't really work that well. hehe no , Di I read it like water off a duck's back the first time. I think the whole thin skinned thing leads to lots of problems around here. They always take things you could say in the worst light. Return with a decidedly accusatory tone. Tiis gets returned, escalation follows .. My advice to someone in a personal ecxhange on the forums - if someone helps escalate the situation, what business do they have AR'ing it? Takes a lot of nerve, I think. If you see that you were misunderstood on the forums, dont argue with the person, try instead to understand why they took offense and explain what you meant. If you were the one trying to be rational , all the forum readers will see whats going on anyhow.

My big point I guess I am belabouring about all this nonsense is that it's only human nature that we sometimes respond in kind as opposed to taking the high road and I include myself in that as well. There are a lot of worse things to get worried about than whether someone pissed you off on the forums and I am fundamentally opposed to censorship anyway. "Someone hurt my feelings by calling me <insert expeltive>" is not a valid reason to censor them IMO. I would rather worry about whether I will ever get a date, or if I really *can* afford to spend a thousand lindens a week on clothes. These are far more pressing questions. .

Excellent suggestions. It might also be good to make one leg a bit shorter than the other to make turning the other cheek not only easier but actually difficult to avoid.

I agree with Zapoteth: Far better if avatars had brains and simple commands to use them. I could wile away the hours Conferrin' with the flowers Consultin' with the rain And my head I'd be scratchin' While my thoughts were busy hatchin' If I only had a brain... I would not be just a nuffin' My head all full of stuffin' My heart all full of pain I would dance and be merry Life would be a ding-a-derry If I only had a brain.

You have my vote. I think I've made my viewpoint pretty clear in other threads.

I think my system came with this feature already installed (possibly part of my firewall). But I'd like the option of feathers on my av, even oily ones. neko
