Client plugin / add-on architecture akin to Mozilla Firefox's

Is there any plans or road map in place outlining when a plugin / add-on architecture similar to Mozilla Firefox's will be implemented? I'm going to just assume that it's not a matter of 'if' but a matter of 'when' this will happen? I'm thinking that if video games like World of Warcraft and software like Firefox can be popularized by this type of ability than so can Second Life.

If this ability is already in existence (using libsecondlife perhaps?) please let me know and send along any relevant links to documentation on this? I'm interested in building some simple add-ons to better my in-world experience. I've been scouring through jira, the wiki and google but I don't see much active work being done on this front.

Here's everything I found so far:

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Plugin_architecture
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1847
http://secondlifegrid.net/programs/api
http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2007/06/14/open-source-second-life-add-ons-still-months-away/

Thanks so much!

The only - current - way of adding functionality to the viewer is by creating a custom one using the open source drops (make sure you understand the license if you plan on distributing it) which has problems of its own (out of sync with the official browser, people won't trust their password with it, etc).

There was a lively debate (along with Lindens commenting) about a plugin architecture over on the SLdev list many months ago (http://lists.secondlife.com/pipermail/sldev/ for the archives or http://tinyurl.com/yflh2s to search it with Google).
