For some reason, the name of the program is escaping me (it was made by the same people who made Painter), but I used a 3d modelling program that offered the ability to paint directly on a model - it would create the corresponding texture map on the fly. I would love to be able to paint directly on the face of a prim, and directly on clothing on an avatar, and have it generate the texture. Definitely not a crucial feature, but it would fall into the nice to have category once they run out of things :)

We wants it, yes we does, Precious!

Imagine the hours of trial and error that this could save!

Actually, I would vote for this feature as an external app also. Having tht ability to edit and preview textures outside of SL and then just uploaidng them may be the simplest and most efficent way to acheive this.

Hmmm, are you pondering what I'm pondering Pinky?

I think the program you are talking about was ray dream 3d or ray dream studio. It's a nice feature, but lacks all my favorite things from photoshop.

Perhaps he was thinking of the Maxon Body Paint 3D suite. Able to paint in real time on surfaces, generate maps, and even paint bumpmapping seamlessly on an object in 3d in realtime. Yours for only a thousand dollars :/

Prolly thinking of the Metacreations Painter 3D that went with Metacreations Painter. :)

There have been and are dozens of such packages and plugins. Just off the top of my head I can think of a few I've played with - Deep Paint 3D, MeshPaint 3D, Tattoo, Amazon 3D Paint, Mirai, Flesh, SurfaceSuite, TrU-V, Ohmikron.

Personally I'd be fine with the ability to use a paint program to paint onto flat UV Maps if there was a viewer that could show you your avatar modelling the texture, just like the one you can download for The Sims.

This would be nice to see, could allow for some cool effects and save some time on things.

Another program that allows this is Truespace.

Moove method

No quite the same but the version used in prim decor in Moove is very simple compared to upload in SL, u simly drag tga or jpg files from ur pc right into the in game room and they appear as tex cubes, throw it at the wall or object and it paints that object with the pattern and automatically sizes it to the object.

A version of this wuld be most useful in SL. Much fasterm u culd then apply all the Sl editing tools to the pattern.

an external tool for this would be extremely helpful (so you could work offline etc.) but would involve being able to export SL models to paint on, which has been discussed on several different threads around here.

However it would be implemented, it sure would help someone like me who doesn't like the constant tweaking process involved in texture mapping! :)
