Ok, I am desperate here. I live next to the single most obnoxious player in SL, and I am constantly bombared with his sound abuse. Between his sexual phrases recorded in his own voice played over and over, to his constant playing of about the same 10 songs, sometimes the same song in a row over and over, I am desperate. We should be able to shut off player and object generated sounds completely. The sliders do not help. Ideally, if we mute a player, we should not hear anything from them, including their objects. Also, the range on sounds is way too high -sounds should not extend any further than chat text does - right now they extend across a sim, which is silly and annoying. Please do something about this - taking to said person about his sound use resulted in "F*ck off, I can do what I want on my own land".

I agree on the base point, more sound controls.

I am in favor of a client side approach that allows you to set a falloff/attenuation range with slider, so each can customize their exp.

Another thing I would love to see is a land setting that would allow you to block off land sounds, not sure how this would be worked but for those with small plots of land it would be usefull.

Who's the player? j/k j/k :D

That's aweful. I think all aspects of sound in SL need to be rexamined. It's so buggy :( and can get annoying.

Hopefully the new llSetSoundRadius() function in 1.1 cuts down on the accidental sound griefing. But still, there are those users who simply dont care what their neghbors say about their music playing habits.

Cristiano, I agree totally with your plea for more sound controls. Loud music from a neighbor was a major factor in my deciding recently to move from one sim to another.

It's also an issue in Lindenworld, IMHO. I know that sounds contribute to the overall carnival feel of the amusement park, but the range on the sound for the attractions seems a bit too far. I've been playing a lot of Ezhar's Senso game lately, and I have wondered how many people within hearing range I'm annoying with the looped techno music that plays with the game.

For me, the absolute most baffling thing about the existing sound controls is how the "master volume" control is just that -- a control for the volume of all of Windows. How is this useful?

I can only assume that it was overlooked during testing. It's easy to speculate how something like that could happen.

The master volume control sets the maximum range for the sound.

Say you have a master volume that goes from 1-10

But you want the LOUDEST sound to be at 5. So you set the MVC to 5. Now the other controls ajust the volume within that range, so even thow the other sliders goes past the MVC slider visualy the range on the setting is only between 1 and 5.

First off Cristaino, this sounds like a job for the abuse reporter. No Technological Solutions To Social Problems.

Second, for people who are trying to be nice, llTriggerSoundLimited works right now, today, try it out.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear -- I was referring to the System Volume slider in the Audio tab of the Preferences menu. It's LITERALLY a control for the SYSTEM volume, not "all sounds in SL", but the entire OS.

Wednesday,

I tried the abuse report route to no avail - not even a response. And long prior to that, I tried the route of simply asking him nicely to play a wider variety of music than the same Tupac song on an endless loop. Said person gave me an expletive answer about his land, he can do what he wants, and then threatened to beat up my girlfriend. Classy guy.

I disagree with you that a technological solution is not needed. As it stands, the sound implementation in SL is flawed - the range on sounds is too great, and we have no real control over that experience.

There are many times I wished I did not have to hear the same Simpsons quote or strange demonic child laugh for the 10th time in a row. It does not really constitute abuse, I just happen to find it annoying and would like to have the ability to control it without having to mute my compuer.

The master volume control in SL is useless - Windows already has this. What is needed is a similar feature to what Windows Media Player has, where you can adjust the volume of the music playing from the application without affecting the OS.

I am all for working things out with someone, and I have gone through the proper channels to do that.
Technical solutions can improve social problems - if I had the tools to not have to listen to my inconsiderate neighbor, the social problem would be solved for me.
