A short list of features I would like to see

I start advising that I'm italian, so, please, forgive my bad english.

SL is something incredible. I discovered it some months ago and it opened to me a totally new world. But there are things that could be done better, at least for my short experience. Here is a short list of them:

1. Body attachment points are few. Example: if i wear a mantle I can't wear wings, if I wear a hat, my hair disappear and so on. My tought is that avatars should have more than 1 attach point for each body part. And some "not-on-body" attach points for special objects as poofers, flight enhancers, AO and so on;

2. HUD attachment points are few and useless. A better mechanism should be that the user just have to select Attach to HUD and the object will be attached on the screen, in the first free coordiantes. Then the user shoulb be able to move it where he want. Why the limitation to those 8 positions? By the way why not to create a scrolling (or sliding) bar where users can attach all the huds and select them when needed?

3. THE POSSIBILITY TO CHANGE THE NAME!!!!

4. A key to close the eyes of the avatar. I often leave my avatar sleeing at my home. I hate to see her sleeping with open eyes;

5. More than 5 sitting animations, walking animations, sitting grounds animation and so on;

6. Possibility to use a joystick/joypad to control the avatar, and of course to configure it;

7. Catergories, tag or tree organizing in friends list;

9. Better line editor in the chat (CTRL+SHIFT+LEFT/RIGHT ARROW to select words, HOME, END etc etc);

10. Better movement control. When I do a step forward, my avatar moves for more than 1 step. When I turn backward, avatar don't just turns but turns and walks for some steps. It's almost impossible to make a single step and to move to a precise position;

11. A better TP appearing animation. When my avatar appear in a new position after a TP, she literally fall in that place. It is not so nice. It should instead appear, there, with some cool effect, or just like Star Trek Teleporting, or like a ghost that becomes visible;

12. Absolutely delete the typing animation!!!

13. Emoticons buttons near the chat line and the IM line. Emoticons should make facial animations;

14. The possibility to create gestures with shout chat lines;

15. Cam shouldn't go over walls. This is for privacy. When I'm at my home whoever can look inside my room and see what I'm doing. If you can't stop this everywhere, at least give the possibility to inhibit this.

16. "Place limited" streaming music. I work in a club and they streams music. Everywhere I go in that land I receive the same streaming. Instead music should stop when I go out from the club.

17. Random weather

Well, actually nothing more comes to my mind.

If I will think to something more, i will add in a next thead.

I agree with most of these, except ...

3. I would hate to see name change - you need to be able to identify residents without worrying they might "vanish". What i would say though, LL should give you 14 days (say) to live with your name, and give you one opportunity to change it. Once your first 14 days are past, no name changes.

12. The typing animation is sometimes useful. It can be switched off already in the Client menu, plus many AOs switch it off (the one I am wearing now does not type).

I also echo the need for 1. 6. 10. 15. 16. 17.

I would like to add one more (which I might add as a separate feature suggestion) : can they move the Voice "transmit" signal so it is inside the name label HUD? In a crowded place it is very difficult to see who is speaking as the name and the signal can be a distance from each other.

What does it matter if people can "vanish" with a name change?

They do already by getting new accounts.

This will just allow them to vanish without losing all their stuff.

None of my friends have ever disappeared in my 3 months in SL, even though a few of them have got alts.

I don't see why any honest person would need to disappear like that, and as for the current situation where people are stuck with bad names they chose as just a joke - the 14-day 'cooling off' period with one permitted name change would sort that problem out.

#6 can be achieved in a few ways already!

There's an option in one of the menus to enable the "Joystick Flycam".

If you're using WIndows XP, you can already use an XBox360 game controller with your PC.

There's a small FREE program I've used when my RSI is acting up and it hurts to used a keyboard. It's called "Joystick-to-Mouse" and lets you map joystick functions to keyboard/mouse functions.

no offense, but 3 months is nothing.

Ive been in SL for over 2 years and chatting online for 10. Ive seen plenty of times where people have disappeared.

Besides there is no rule people have to be honest in Second Life. If they have the ability to start over from scratch by changing to an alt, I see no reason not to simply allow them to change their name so they dont loose the itmes they paid good money for.

If scams were regulated, etc , it might be different. But they arent. So honesty would likely be a meaningless concern from the LL side of things.

Any thing that would get you banned over would be under LL oversight anyhow .. and they will know who the old name was.

I like this idea... more so changing the surname. Maybe if you get married in SL and you want to change your name to your partner's last name. Or if you just decide you don't like the last name you picked in the first place. I don't know that I'd want to change my first name.. just my last name.



I really like this idea too. It would definately create alot more privacy in your home... or even in a club where there's a changing room, the girls would have ALOT more privacy.



Definately a great idea... I'd love to have thunderstorms... and snow!

I know, this probably isn't the type of response you want, but maybe some tips will help make your Second Life a little a little better for the time being?



Seriously, I think we don't have near enough control over this stuff. But you could try express_cry_emote. It opens your mouth, too, but... heheh... maybe there's a better one... I'd still use it though (:



All I can think about here is how Linden Lab expressed that they want to avoid competing with residents on content creation.



That sounds like an awesome idea!



In Preferences, on the Text Chat tab, disable 'Arrow keys always move avatar when chatting' and all those nice keyboard keys will work pleasingly

That's a really distressing topic, lately, isn't it? I keep thinking, Linden Lab probably won't try to stop people from camming through walls because the client is open-source, and hey I don't even know if they'll even be producing the main viewer themselves eventually. But on the other hand, perhaps taking it out of the main viewer is enough to hold off people with questionable intentions () doing it and writing a story on it.



I also hope to see that functionality turned into something different entirely in the future.
