Now while this isnt a major, oh my gawds we must have it, suggestion - it would make things much easier.
The ability to log (save to a text file) your chat history and your IM's. with some toggles for stripping out server/object messages etc...
Basically too many times I have talked with people about really great ideas - my memory being total junk, and cant remember what was said. worse yet is when you are in the middle of something - working out specifics on a project or just plain talking about something you care about - would normally cut/paste it to a note - only to crash and loose it because the server/ your internet/ or the jokes of fate brings SL to a grinding halt.
(second) Life threatening? no of course not. Aggrivating as all get out? you betcha.
so please please take it into consideration. it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Ever heard of copy & paste?
ctrl-c, ctrl-v to a notecard... ok, not quite 'built in' but it does work.
Sio.

Copy and paste works for when you think to do it, but otherwise you're totaly screwed. I was and still to this day am surprised SL doesn't have a chat loging feature. Practicly every other chat client anything in the world has one I've wanted this feature since day one, its one of those ones where its like "and whyyyy don't we have this?". As you said, its not a biggy, but its there. One thing that makes me think, do object messages go in the log too? What about online/offline notifications? Those are the only two problems I could see with SL chat loging. Alot of times I wouldn't want object messages to appear because I'm testing an object that spams me random numbers or something. You could add "Show Object Messages In Chat Log" and/or "Show Notifications In Log" options somewhere I suppose. I would think just rather not have them in, or atleast leave out notifications but give the option for objects.

I think maybe a more succinct way to put this feature request would be to...
Add a feature that auto-saves any unsaved chat history to a text file every few minutes, or after a certain number of chat lines have been accrued. A new text/log file would be created for each login, or maybe a single file for each single calendar day.

I'd require explict on/off logging rather than purely auto logs or the current system. When I do a class I want to turn on logs at the start, and off at the end. I don't need the 2 hours of socializing before I started class, or the hour afterwards. The current system of copy/paste requires me to go find where the class starts and manually trim it. So would auto-logging per session.

Maybe make a script attachment that listens, records, and sends an email every so often?

Copy and paste? Hah! Funny person. Do you know how long it takes to highlight the entire contents of my chat window? Yeah, try it sometime.
We need a logging feature. And while we're cutting down all those trees, we need a feature that lets us record chat too.

We need a logging feature. And while we're cutting down all those trees, we need a feature that lets us record chat too. I do it all the time. Its easy. Takes only a few moments. I even do it during teaching sessions. You just have to learn how to filter out for it. None to hard really. Just a matter of attention span and a little patience.

ctrl-c, ctrl-v to a notecard... ok, not quite 'built in' but it does work. This is assuming your computer doesn't crash during the process. If you've got an unstable system or a flaky video card, a log would be good so you could recover from where you crashed.

I've noticed that if my chat log is considerably long, doing CTRL-A does not actually select the entire chat log.
So I end up having to select in chunks anyhow. Which I've noticed is much improved since I upgraded my RAM, but still, I'd like to see a logging feature too.

Yes, we DEFINITELY need a way to save this stuff to files (preferably not just one big one, but one with a starting date -- if you log on at 03:00 on March 21st, the time and date should be in the file.) and then automate stripping out junk like chat from scripts or "Billy has come online" messages if so desired. It would be trivial to write a script to do that (except for objects) after the fact, but it'd be a handy feature to have regardless.
Please let us save chat logs automatically!
