In posting my response to Tacky Structures, I realized that the same argument can be made for sounds. Some people are rather fond of sounds that other people would find distasteful and/or annoying.

While the subject of thinking about how to mute buildings is a very difficult one to tackle, muting sounds is a lot easier, as they are just artifacts of the world, not physical structures that have to be dealt with.

For example, I think it would be great to be able to mute the sounds generated by a given user...or more importantly any OBJECTS owned by a given user. I am not talking about muting their text, mind you. Just their sounds.

Knowing that one person has an affinity for the flatulence sound accompanied by rather loud (and extremely frequent) explosions, it would be nice to be able to mute this user's sounds and the sounds of any objects they are wearing or have created.

You could do this any number of ways. The chat history window allows you to mute users within it, could we not come up with a similar kind of feature for sounds we are forced to endure.

And before I end this, I will fully acknowlege that one persons' disdain for fart noises is another persons' "funnier than all get out". I am only asking that I be allowed to make my own choice for what I hear. I am sure other people would like to see this.

I also acknowlege that this could be dangerous. Say I mute user A, then I wander into the outlands where user A is now shooting me with his whatevergun. My health goes down, but I do not hear the audiable clues that would otherwise tell me he's hitting me, so I die not knowing what happens.

To be honest, I think that is a risk worth taking to have the feature available to me.

this is why I play with speakers off about 75% of the time.

And that is a shame because now you are forced to limit YOUR options because of liberties taken by other people. I would think that runs contrary to the original point of SL.
