Would it be possible to include AAC+ encoded streaming within Secondlife

I know alot of people in SL have stations that broadcast via shoutcast (in MP3 or MP3pro encoding) but what about also adding AAC+ encoding too?

What do you think about that?

Does Quicktime support it? If so then it should already work :)

Negative

i dont believe quicktime supports it. but i wish it would

AAC+ encoding gives a lot better quality at a lower bitrate

We're missing out on some good streams cuz SL doesn't support the format :)

Maybe we should ask Santa (aka Phillip Linden) to give that as a Christmas present?? :P

Well its been a while,

Wondering if this has been looked @ by the lindens. it would be awesome if we could get AAC+ encoding (for WMP and Winamp support) to work in SL

Hmm, the main issue is if it can be made to support multiple platforms. The main advantage of Quicktime is that it is relatively easy to integrate, and is cross-platform compatible. However, windows media formats are typically very poor as Microsoft does not develop cross-platform, and support for newer versions of it are buggy or lacking functionality.

If you want to get Linden attention though, you are better posting a JIRA issue so that other people can vote on it, head over to jira.secondlife.com and log-in with your Second Life user details. Do a quick-search to be sure no-one else has created an issue already, if they have then vote for it, if not then create one.

This way people can vote on it, my recommendation would be to keep it general such as "Improve streaming audio support in SL" and list all formats you know of that are quite widely used but aren't currently supported.
