I know that a peer to peer voice interface is in the possible add-ons in the open source group, but they talk about using teamspeak or other systems. Why not look into a sip based protocal or IAX to work with an Asterisk server. The server itself is free and on top of being able to communicate without one user having to be the server for a group chat, you could also tie an inbound (or outbound) phone number to an avatar. Imagine taking SL to a new level of reality. You could get a real phone call inside. I know that the work that I do personally became alot easier when I built a "click to call" system for it that ties into our Asterisk server.
Just some of my thoughts.
