Let's say I invite someone into Second Life who is a family member or close friend. Could we please be given the option to open up a retired name so that they can use it with us? Heck, if it's that much of a problem to do, how about you limit us to 2 a year? Seriously, I've had a couple friends who didn't feel like joining just because we couldn't share last names. This should get an instant yes/no from the Lindens. I don't need an explanation either way, I just like fast answers If it's not an instant yes/no, I'd still appreciate a notification that you read my suggestion, thanks

I psuedo-agree with this.
I think there should be more requirements for opening up a name though.
The Last Name must have <= 10 members.
Once the last name has < 10 members, more members can be added to the name up to until the name reaches 10 members.
Only current members of the last name can add people to the last name.
A member can only grant x amount of memberships to the name within y amount of time.

Id also like this feature. So say you wanted to get married in it, and wanted the other party to do what you would normally do in RL (without all the paperwork), so that people would identify you more easily as a couple. But then again, this could lead to confusion on notecards so Im not positive it would be a smart idea or even possible.
But it would be nice to have this option.

I think the idea of women changing names upon marriage is horribly sexist and outdated. But thats just me

LOL well then.. *coughs and bites lips hard* Perhaps someone might have forgotten the reasoning behind marriage.... but then again its a matter of opinion. In this day in age.. you DO have the option of keeping your name. Its not like its written in stone or anything.

Something Eggs and I agree on? LOL. I like the Latin custom of women keeping their sur names.
ie. Pituca Fairlight Chang. Pituca Chang de Fairlight

Also to point out.. the idea of changing names was to keep things simple and less complex. Say for example, what about if your siblings decided to marry a Schlegel for example? Are they gonna be named Chang-Fairlight-Schlegel?

I realize that bringing up Monty Python often has a similar effect on a thread as bringing up nazis but Eisnman's last post is reminding me of the endless lastnames of the candidates in the Silly Party parlimentary elections.

Keep in mind, I'm not asking for changes of name after already joining. I'm simply asking that new members get old last names when invited by those old members.

Heh eins, you want to keep names simple? My RL name is Jorge Manuel Alves das Neves Lima. And this is a short name The traditional formula for a portuguese name is one or two first names, plus one or two baptismal names (entirely made up, and based on some religious theme) plus the surnames of your grandparents and then the surnames of your parents. I think. w00t =)

I always thought it'd be cool if there was a place in your 2nd life profile where you could put "married to <whoever>" or like your relationship status in SL .. like "single" or "unavailable" , "commited" , etc ..

Marriage is kinda outdated, pointless and sexist, too, so it's all good. From: someone Originally posted by Eggy Lippmann I think the idea of women changing names upon marriage is horribly sexist and outdated. But thats just me

One of my college professors did something I thought was pretty cool. When she got married, both her and her husband hyphenated their names together.

I also think it would be cool to offer an invitation for someone to get your last name. My brother is thinking of joining SL now that there is a Macintosh version. It would be great if we could have the same last name, but I think Skallagrimson is already "retired".
