I think the official answer would be "if you don't want the chatter, leave the group" but I'd like there to be something in between.

If we were able to turn off IM, then people would start wanting unlimit groups. Because nobody will be leaving groups due to im messages bothering them. if someone is not happy with a group leave it.

at one time if you closed out a group im it stayed closed why they changed it I have no idea but despite repeated requests to reinstate this they never did and leaving a group with annoying spam isn't always an option when you have rental space there. If I turn something off or close it I expect that to be final I wouldn't think its technically that difficult?
