Add support for joysticks. At least for movement of the avatar, and gesture mapping to buttons.

Why can or can't this be done?

and if it was made available on Xbox, we could use the Steel Battalion 'monster' controller! the controls on that thing would take controlling SL to a whole new level..

..all those buttons and things.. could possibly make prim editing easier!

..but enough dreaming for me..

..good idea though ..i wonder, has anyone tried this?

Humm...I've got a very programmable Joystick/Throttle set. I'm doubtful that it would work very well for editing (too sensitive), but it might be interesting for vehicles and combat.

I'll try it out and present the results :-)

I use this quite successfully:

(edit) I agree that native joystick support would be very nice, though.

What we need is a linear input API that allows us to map keys and mouse and joystick buttons and axes to a set of events trapped by control(). The client would need to have an interface for allowing people to do the mapping themselves. That way, a person with a joystick that has a throttle control could use that to control the speed of a vehicle, and a person without a throttle could use the arrow keys or page up/down or anything else they wanted.

This input mapping feature is standard in just about every game you can buy that involves any kind of motion. Maybe not overhead scrolling RPGs, but definitely first-person shooters and flight/driving sims.

I agree with Huns 100%. We need a way to access the full range of input devices --like the spacebar-- available to us.
