It's just an animation, overide it with something else.
Personally I find it handy, it lets me know someone is about to say something.

I can take it or leave it...........I don't pay much attention anyway. Same goes with the "typing" you see when in IM. Useless features that can be done away with that I'm sure put load on the servers. Someone's idea of "kewl".

What I would love to find is an override animation for typing that is me clawing at my face instead of typing in the air. Blood is optional. E

I like having a typing indicator in chat. I like knowing that somebody is going to say something.
However, I agree that there should be other choices than the default typing animation. I didn't really like it that much at first, and now I'm bored with it too.
What I'd want is for that animation to be overridable as easily as others, so we can choose a type anim as easily as we now choose our walk. The way it is now, we have to use a separate typing overrider which is a) another thing to buy and futz with, and b) extra load on the world.
For now, if you don't want to show the typing animation at all, get some stands and sits with priority 4, and then you won't see it.

That sends a "/", so everyone gets to see the extra "/". Try "/0" instead, as in "/0Hello World". If you put channel 0 in, you get no typing animation, the chat works, and the "/0" doesn't get sent. You still get the head-bob, though. The only way to avoid that is to use a scripted object to talk for you. default { state_entry() { llListen(8,"",llGetOwner(),""); } listen(integer c,string n,key a,string s) { llSay(0,s); } }
Put that in an attachment with the same name as yourself. Then "/8Hello world" will get "Your Name: Hello world" without any animations playing on you. The other thing you can do is use an AO with high priority standing/sitting animations, so the typing animations don't play, but then you stand there like a store dummy instead of looking at people.

I agree that the typing animation is useful. Without it, it's too easy to walk away from someone who is trying to say something to you.

Hahahahaha...............don't pay any attention to me. I've been told I'm insane. Your "boon" doesn't fit my idea of a boon...................but what the heck does an insane person know? And I wasn't complaining about the typing..............I said it's a useless feature. And insane or not that is my opinion. But thanks for your feedback anyway.

Well, I know I'm insane, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But I do like the "so and so is typing..." and wish that it persisted consistently in my IM clients (I think AIM doesn't always report it, or was it YIM? And one of them doesn't report it in a group setting while it does on a private level).

I share that insanity... When I show people in RL what SecondLife looks like... the first time they seem someone typing in air it always seems to get a good chuckle out of them when they realize what it means. How can that be a bad thing? Though I'm still getting used to the 'focus changes' and too often type navigation keystrokes into my IM window which does get embarassing, knowing the person on the other end is waiting for me to finish typing.

The focus changes need help. If I'm focused on the word the arrow keys will move me, but my chatting keys WON'T WORK despite having the chat bar open. What they need is a preference, not of "arrows move avatar" but " ) WASD Arrows move the avatar." Then it won't matter which has focus, the world or the chat bar, it'll make sense and work for both parties. If your a WASD person you'll be moving the focus back and forth (or closing the chat bar) and the arrow keys will, gasp, move the cusor in the chat bar all the time because they don't use the arrows to move. If your an arrows person--like I am--I can live with the arrows not moving the chat cursor so long as I don't have to change focus all the time. My keyboard will do its intended fuction: type text, and the arrows will do their intended function: move me around. Maybe make it ( ) WASD moves the avatar Arrows move the avatar - [ ] arrows move cursor in chat

I don't quite understand. I've preserved all existing functionality with my three options there.
