I feel very restricted by having only 2 levels I can put people in - calling card and Friend. I would like to argue for a third level - "Best friends". And it would work like this:
1. Calling cards - same as now.
2. Friends - in your list, but you wouldn't get notified every time they logon and off, they wouldn't have map privileges or be able to modify your objects
3. Best friends - same way as Friends list works now.
Better still, why not combine all these into one Friends list with 3 tabs? - Calling Cards, Friends, Best Friends. The default tab it would open in would be Best Friends.
Why is this useful? For me, calling cards are impersonal and a bit 'cold' and only get used with people I don't know. Best friends are people I see or hear from quite often, so there is regular communication on one level or other. But what about all the rest - people who I had a very interesting chat with once, we made friends, but I've never seen since? I don't want to cross them off my list, but at the same time, I don't want to know every time they logon or logoff (but if I switch the 'notify' message off, then I don't get to know when my best friends logon or logoff, and that is something I do want to keep).
In RL I have people who are 'friends' and I have people who are 'good friends'. I wish I could have the same option in SL.

From: Draco18s Majestic Um.... #2 there IS a calling card. Yes I know - but that's what I'm saying. You haven't quite got it I don't think. I'm suggesting THREE levels of Friend instead of 2. Calling Card (means nothing except you have the persons name in your inventory). Best Friend (same as Friends list now) Ordinary friend (between the two - you can see who's online in bold but you don't get notified when they login or logout and they don't get things like map privilege unless you 'promote' them; basically I want to be able to say to someone new who I've had one good chat/evening/dance/coffee with "ok, you mean more than an impersonal calling card - we can be friends, just not best friends yet" Maybe you have to be female to understand this??

The logon/off notifications are what make a contact a "friend" vs. a "calling card" right now. I don't want some kind of bizzare "I can see if they're online or not, but not get notification if it changes." If it changes I WANT TO KNOW, because I won't be checking my friends list every 5 minutes to see if someone logged on or not.

Tid, I agree with your idea of a new friends category. Maybe we could call it "Acquaintances".
But as for the permissions, I would not give ANY privileges automatically to an Acquaintance...only put them in the list for easy access.
And, speaking of permissions, I believe you can already set these on a case-by-case basis. All of my Friends have the ability to see my online status, but not my location, and they can't modify my objects.
