I'd like to see one (or more) additional options for where to start on login:
(keep) My home (keep) last location
And add: Random safe location (stress *safe*)
And possibly a list of the different Sim names to choose from, so that if (for instance) Zoe is chosen, then you'll start somewhere in/on Zoe, etc.
Reason... My home and my last location are currently the same place within .005 m or so, and that sim just went down. Now, I'm sure it'll only be down for a moment or two ... but what if it's down all night?

home in downed sims

If your home location is in a downed sim, then the servers will find a new location to put you in a sim that is up. I'm not sure what the new-location algorithm looks like but it has always worked for me. In short, don't worry too much if your home sim is down. Also, we currently assign one developer each night to watch the sims and whos job is to find out what went wrong and get them back up as soon as possible, so your home sim shouldn't be down all night. Sim downtime during beta is often a problem, but we're getting better (no really! ask an old timer . Someday we'll even have a real operations team... when hardware failures and bandwidth hiccups are our biggest worries.

I had it tell me tonight (shortly after things opened, and when a couple sims went down) to wait a few minutes before reconnecting. Not sure if the login server (or whatever handles user logins) was why I had to wait or not.

Andrew, ah, thanks for the explaination =) I didn't know any of that.
I'd still like to see the extra where-to-start options, though (but I won't be a PITA about it =)

In the login screen, click on the "Preferences" button. You'll see an option there to choose whether to log in at home or in your last location.
Cheers,
James
