Not every keyboard in the world is laid out like an American keyboard. Is there any chance LL would either allow us to set our own shortcuts, or only assign shortcuts that work (or at least don't interfere) with international ones?
The most annoying one in the last update is the fact that the Hide UI (Ctrl-Alt-1) works regardless of having the debug menu enabled or not. Whenever I now try to type the :| smiley, the UI hides.
A lot of European keyboard assign a special value to the Ctrl-Alt combination (the Alt Gr key) and it's used to assign three characters to a single key. For instance, hitting the top row 1 yields '&', using it with Shift yields '1' and using it with Ctrl-Alt yields '|'.
So even though I'm simply trying to chat, the SL viewer thinks I'm constantly using keyboard shortcuts whenever I hit a 'special' character.
There's also the Ctrl-[ and Ctrl-] combination, except that typing '[' or ']' requires the Alt Gr key so it's an impossible key combination to hit on some European keyboards.
(Please don't suggest bug reporting, I did it months ago on this specific issue)

There is definitely a growing demand for remappable commands. Not just internationally, but from gamers, laptop owners and power users. I think it's just a matter of time. Some people use third party programs to remap keys. Sorry I can't offer a more immediate solution at this point, Kitty.

customizable interface
12-24-2006 16:54
Here's my support for a customizable interface (I'm currently going through all the vote proposals because I found no easy way to search for the title keywords in the vote descriptions - so, this is preliminary. And maybe that search function might be a good thing.)
Gamers are used to have often-used functions on a single key.
Examples:
I'd like to be able to configure my key commands and mouse buttons the way I'm used to.
******* This may be a way to make SL barrier-free for certain disabled people *******
E.g.
MOVING AND CAMERA ANGLE CHANGE alt left mouse drag --map to--> left mouse drag ctrl alt left mouse drag --map to--> middle mouse drag
SNAPSHOT snapshot button (don't show interface) --map to--> s snapshot button (do show interface) --map to--> shift s snapshot button (all other options) --map to--> opens snapshot window
MAP ctrl m --map to--> shift m ctrl shift m --map to--> m
POSITIONING / CUSTOMIZING OF VISIBLE BUTTONS I'd like to sort the custom buttons at the bottom of the screen in an order I like. Or even switch off unnecessary buttons altogether; who needs a fly button after the newbie stage? PgUp and PgDown do this beautifully.
I'd also discard the snapshot button and use s and shift-s instead.
Maybe the pro SL residents would do away with most of the buttons altogether and rather insert their own ...
In my experience, if you want to be fast, nothing beats a customized one-keystroke command.
A SL user may want to have different sets of key mappings, that are stored locally. These commands could be geared for special situations like socializing, building, moving etc.
Thank you for your attention.
