Although not all cards support it, avatars' hair blows in the wind. For those of us with very short hairstyles, this can result in intermittent bald spots on the back of the head.
I suggest a toggle in our hair appearence settings to allow us to disable hair blowing in the wind. Think of it as a big can of mousse.

At least on my system, when I turn off the "Avatar Vertex Program" option, it stops all of the avatar wind effects. Some have told me they need to turn off the bump maps on avatars too to get it off, so it may be a try your luck setting.
I think the effect is too pronounced in the first place though. Some things look very ugly when blowing in the breeze. Create a male av, set him to Duffel Bag, and make the crotch on the pants loose to see what I mean...

Yikes! The reality disagreements are piling up! I'd like this at an option too. I certainly haven't seen this effect (or shinyness or bumpiness for that matter - damn OEM drivers). I hope I haven't been walking around half-bald!

Isnt that controlled by the same setting as cloth blowing in the wind? So if you go into preferences, then display, and select something other than "bump mapped & cloth" it might stop it.

It seems avatar vertex turns off bump maps for avatars, I wish Blowing In The Wind was a different option because thats the only reason I want avatar vertex personaly. Using Avatar Vertex causes frosting of hair where there should be alpha's and avatars faces to be black when viewed from afar, plus it totaly kills bumps. I vote for Avatar Wind Effect as a seperate option

I've experienced the same thing as Oz; it might be an ATI related issue...? Pretty weird though...I'm all for adding more preference options.

Well, I think you should be able to specify Hair Blowing in Wind as a seperate, system-wide setting, AND on the actual hair object itself, to override other people's settings. That way, you're covered both ways. And the wind shouldn't affect it as much as it does, either, particularly not shorter hair.

The only issue that comes up with giving players tons of preference options is that you can't be sure what others are seeing. For example, if you have something that looks "HELLA KEWL" with shiny and bump maps turn on, but ugly as a monkey's backside with it off.... well, it's not good. I'd rather be more certain in knowing what other players are seeing so the stuff I make can be...well, flawless?
So I'm kinda going back on what I just said above, but a specific setting in the sense that it only applies to one avatar/object is usually a good idea. Since this is kinda a similar thing, add in an option to stop your avatar from automagically running certain "stand" animations, like was being discussed on the scripting forum. "Don't random animate my av!"
....blah blah...blah....<insert more spam here...>

Might as well just give every body part, and/or avatar adding thing scripting. Like clothes and hair have their own scripting or more options. But talk about over complicating things. It'd be odd to see some people with hair blowing and some people not. I think its a kinda cool idea, if you had the ability to have a specific hair peice to blow or not blow, but I think it'd also be conficting to my brain lol, maybe if you had both that option and the toggle of having hair blow or not, where if you have it set, you see hair that is optioned by the creator to blow, but if you have it toggled off you don't see any hair blowing what-so-ever. Personaly I'd rather have a toggle than nothing at all, toggle seems easier to do than having each hair have an option for it.
