Okay we've all tried Busy mode, and that doesn't do much good at all. AFK is a joke, since any little movement of the mouse takes you out of it.

How about a privacy mode where you can't be traced by "Friends" and people -can't- IM you (Goes directly to email). Basically it would be nice to pretend to be offline when you're online.

When I come on, I usually do so to build stuff. Building is what I like -most- about SL. But when I'm getting several IMs as soon as I come on, everyone wants to ask a question, or everyone wants to chat your ear off (and most of them demand your attention), it makes it difficult to get anything done.

I certainly don't want to be rude to people, but no one gets a hint anymore (Busy mode, hello?).

Or perhaps, is there a way to make the editor work without actually being connected? Like an outside program where we can work on stuff at our leisure, without being on SL, and then import our builds when we're ready to come on?

Really, I just wish there was a way that I could work in peace, without being rude to anyone that IMs me. And I consider 'ignoring' them to be rude.

Yes, I think a "Privacy Mode" or "Appear Offline" feature would be nice.

Some people make an alt for building privacy.

Not a bad idea, but why should we have to? A privacy mode would be great. :D

I don't really have a need for it, but I agree.

Jakkal, this is a topic that has come up AGAIN and AGAIN and I'm happy that you're voicing this... because even I could find it extremely useful. :)

(I wish I could cue Jeffrey Gomez to do one of his magic threadrains showing many or all previous instances that this "Privacy Mode", aka SHOW AS OFFLINE was mentioned on SL Forums.)

AUTOMATION OF REDUNANT COMMUNICATION is what it comes down to for me. Why, what does that mean? Well, when many people IM me and I can't sadly can't quite chat at the moment, it is a repetitive and mindnumbing task for me to let each of them know this is the "silent slice" of the Torleypie. Inefficient. Inelegant.

Plus, think about these things:

-Stretching your IM window very wide makes LOTS of alternating grayspace after Friends's names. That could be used to show other info—like this, for instance!

-When searching for someone in Find, if they're online, a little yellow head-and-shoulders with a green outline appears. Surely, with color used to communicate a lot of info in SL (like cyan squares on the minimap for your objects), we can put this to better use. A red icon could be like, "Stop, please, I'm BIZZAY!" ;)

-BUSY mode sucks in that you can't have more than a single message, and it's shared across all accounts on that computer too! The Preferences should at least be on a per-Resident basis. Which points to...

-The impracticality of using an alt to do building for you. Why, they end up having their own name on the prims they rez, being completely counterproductive to any anonymity you would have hoped for! Not to mention permissions problems, which are a YUGE PITA. Again, inelegant, inefficient.

When someone who loves to engage the community like myself wants a feature like this, you know it's time. :D

All can I recommend is to keep voicing your opinions if you really want this, because the collective maelstrom will pull many new Resis in and increase awareness.

There are also SEVERAL proposals on this in the voting system, one of the biggest is:

http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=52

but it hasn't been worded very clearly. See Travis Lambert's explanation.

And if you're in the mood for more hyperlinks, this topic was also mentioned in a thread I started to engage more discussion... aptly named:

NO SHAKING HANDS—gaping holes and missing the obvious in SL
