I've looked online to see if Second life has some form of chat zones which can stop chat outside the zone from being heard inside the zone and vice versa, and I haven't found anything about this. I wouldn't mind seeing something like this so I can build something and then when people are in the building they can talk and no1 outside the zone can hear them.
If this does already exist how do I create a zone like it?

That would break your immersion.
We're supposed to pretend that text chat is sound waves that are audible for a certain range and get weaker as distance increases.
Whether it makes sense or serves anyone's purposes very well, as well as requiring distance calculations for every line of text, doesn't matter.
In other words, it sounds like a good idea to me.
You are talking about text chat rather than voice chat, aren't you ?

From: SuezanneC Baskerville That would break your immersion. Because telepathic conversations are more common than sound proof walls, right?

From: Keira Wells Because telepathic conversations are more common than sound proof walls, right? Not having access to any subjective experiences other than my own, I can't actually rule that out, though I will say that the number of telepathic experiences I have observed is zero. I was joking, in the event that wasn't clear. I can hardly remember what immersion in SL is like. The gray textures pretty much prevent that, and always having two monitors on pretty much finishes off any immersion that's left. Hmm, on the other monitor from where SL is displayed, I have generally some kind of chat displayed, usually a chat stream of some sort, such as these forums, or facebook, or gmail, all of which give you considerable control over what text you see and who can see your text, and none of which concern themselves with simulated distance to determine chat visibilty. ] The other thing those non-SL chat streams have that SL chat streams don't is persistance. I don't only get to see the chat that occurs when I'm logged in. Thus I get to look for good comments from while I was work, or take my time to answer a question, sometimes hours to answer some of the technical problem questions here. Can't do that in SL.

yep I meant text chat. This would be real good on the mainland of SL where someone could be walking past a club and could not see what the people inside are chatting about untill they walked into the club, this could also work the other way, ppl inside the club can't see the text of the ppl outside the club.
I have seen this feature on other online 3D programs and thought it was a really good feature to have and also adds abit of privacy.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville That would break your immersion. Actually, other way around: Not having this breaks immersion: You can hear things as if they were in the same room through walls, for example. While this is accurate if you're in a trailer park or low-rent apartment building, it's not the case if you're in a castle.
