I noticed that when the telehubs were mostly floating and had the glass deck around them, you made a different walking sound on the glass material. Might need to do some testing, but the type of material a floor is made of, glass, rubber, wood, etc, may already have different sounds associated with them. You can change the material of a prim in edit mode in object detail

I think glass is the only one that makes a different sound, and it doesn't always, sometimes some glass objects just don't make the sound for whatever reason.
You could make shoes that do play sounds I think, have them set to detect land colision and/or colision with objects that aren't your avatar. Couldn't change it for the different types of objects though, but you could make it sound different for when on ground and when on objects.

There used to be a time when walking on different materials made different sounds. For some reason it was broken quite awhile ago and never fixed.
One thing I'd like to see added though is the ability to set your OWN footstep sounds. Not talking about CollisionSound, but something more like FootStepSound.
