BitTorrent DNA

I really do think that Bit Torrent DNA could help Second Life users a huge amount. If I teleport into an area I've never been to before, and there are a lot of people already there, it can take a mind numbing amount of time for all the textures and stuff to load up, meanwhile I'm seeing gray or white models of things, or invisible floors, etc. But bit torrent DNA could allow SL to control what content get's distributed in a peer to peer fashion, and would let users with a little bandwidth to spare help each other get the world around them loaded up faster, while taxing the SL content servers much less. I don't know the technical stuff about BTDNA, but I've looked into it a bit, and I love bit torrent, and I think it would really help. Even if a whole lot of people log into a new area that no one has been at before, pushing the content to them would still be much faster and more efficient using this peer to peer networking system. There are already MMOGs that are using BTDNA to push their patches and stuff.

And of course, downloading the second life viewer software in the first place is always best with bit torrent, there is no doubt at all about that. :)

Bittorrent is actually very inefficient, its advantage is that it distributes the cost of the bandwidth. It might save LL some money to go to peer-to-peer between second life instances, but it would only increase network lag and missing textures.

I would almost agree to this, except for the multiple REDUNDANCY factor. I know, that word is to lindens what some dictator was to a certain religious culture, but seriously, after seeing all the stealth rollbacks over the past few years, redundancy in ANY form would only further help SL's survivability and almost push it to 0%. Network lag is going to be caused regardless of protocol. Download email, you've added network lag, open IE, get network lag, login to SL... guess what? If your NAT table is flooded because of it and your router locks up, blame the hardware vendor, not the protocol.

Bittorrent is less reliable and provides less redundancy than the Amazon S3 system Linden Labs already uses.

Is the Amazon system involved in delivering geometry, textures, etc. to the viewers?

No, but they're not even using TCP for texture downloads yet.

No.
IIRC, during one of his recent Office Hours on Aditi, Prospero Linden said that it would perform worst if compared to their current providers.

(I'd appreciate if someone would rewrote this sentence in proper English, thanks)
