I've had a vision of hosting my own talk show, like Leno,Letterman, Conan, Wayne Brady etc. In order to make that truly effective however, I thought a method of broadcasting should be available. Maybe a simple, or complex script that could send the audio and video from one source and broadcast it to scripted television sets(hopefully low prim simple scripted objects). It could create a whole new market for SL, from TV sales, since they will obviously have to be uniquely scripted objects, maybe broadcasting companies that could host shows, advertising for events and locations, and announcements from LL. Radio could be a less complicated tangent from this idea, yet hold many of the same aspects.
Hopefully many others will find this a good idea and back me up. If you'd like, post here with your comments/suggestions, and support. Lets make this vision real ![]() |

This would put incredibly stress on the serverrs (which have more than enough stress on them already).
I think you may be waiting on this one for a while, not because it's not cool, but for reasons of practicality. It's not like it hasn't been thought of. _____________________

You can create this yourself. It'd just be a project of such massive proportions that you'd need a lot of assistance from people all over the grid.

man, it would take years of scripting even to consider it could even be made!

Assuming that this was technologically feasible, which is basically isn't, the amount of effort that it would require on the part of the Lindens is probably just a little more than any benefit they could hope to get from it at this point.
Your best bet would be to "pre-tape" the show (with Teamspeak or a similar VoIP system for the host and guests) with a live audience in SL, while recording it, then send it to people outside as a DivX (or similarly compressed) video file. SL lends itself well to creating machinima, and a talk show pretty much writes itself. If I wasn't lazy, I might do it myself. ![]() Edit: Moleculor, what are you talking about? _____________________

We've tried talk show type formats on SLive a few times. Once was more a talk radio style show. Nala was doing the talking and rather than call in, people would IM in. The other time was Misstress and Torrid working together on a show with collaboration via Teamspeak. However, latency on that was pretty rough. Doing prerecorded would be interesting to try.
As to server support for something like this, I just don't see it happening any time soon. _____________________

*in* game video rebroadcasting is essentially physically impossible.
*clients* render the graphics, so it would take a client to actually produce the current scene.... there is no way to reproduce that behavior in SL on the server side through scripting _____________________

To my knowledge (and I have done much R&D in the possibilities of broadcasting in SL) there is no way [easily] *currently* to send live video/audio.(It is technical possible with a bit of delay if you have a setup to record the data to file, and then break the resulting video into seperate frame mapped texture/10 second audio clips and ship it back up to SL. A sciprt on the local machine could intheory automate this, but it would be more work than necessary, and still, it is not completely live) However, you _can_ send pre-recorded audio/video to clients on SL without too much pain, even before 1.3 IO capabilities. With 1.3's IO, it should be elementry.
As far as sim stress, I don't see why it would hit them too hard, indeed much less than the physics enabled games and the like. Mattimeo Medici, if you are indeed seriously wanting to try such venture, I do have some stuff that probably could do the task (although it would be much smoother come 1.3's full release). Give me an IM and we'll talk. |
