For us airplane and boat owners, there's nothing more annoying than running into a wal once you reach the end of an island, so i say let us fly over the ocean, not only that but also when teleporters arnt working, i can never get to where i want to go, because of lag or to many people, so by opening air and water space i could actually get there. Also it woould be good for the economy, I could open up an airline which i already have but can't operate because of the walls. Haha maybe we should get rid of teleporters all together so we can open up airlines and make money. Thats not to bad of an idea, with speed boosts available, we could go much faster in planes an boats and people wouldnt be teleporting but they would be getting there fast and helping out the economy by putting lots of money into theairlines and making money circulate. OK i got a little sidetracked there, but the point is PLEASE open up air space and water space inbetween islands and the mainland so i can make my airline and my boat cruise businesses profitable!!!!

I agree that being able to fly or sail from one island to another. I guess some people wouldn't want people to do this, but there is already an option to have their sim not be visible from other sims, and I guess that could work as a way to keep people from sailing there. I wonder how many servers LL would have to dedicate to it, though, and how many problems it would cause. Right now, griefers are able to crash sims they don't even have access to, as long as they can get to the border. If we can't control the oceans, they may be able to do it from there, as well. Also, if boats and planes can use the oceans, I'm sure physical griefer stuff could, as well, and it could float from sim to sim. But yeah, with the way SL is set up, it wouldn't be that easy to do, I guess, but it would be pretty cool if they did find a way to get it working.

Yes I would love to be able to fly unencumbered in my Huey without hitting Sim Boundaries, full parcels or security orbs all ove the place

I see two problems...

First, a lot of the grid squares that are open ocean aren't active. As I understand it, while you can "see" the ocean, it isn't really there, because that piece of territory isn't running on a server somewhere. To make "active" open ocean, LL would have to run a lot more low-prim sims. Under the current setup, that means that somebody has to actually buy them.

Some private island developers do keep a good bit of open ocean in their developments to provide places for boating and flying and such. LL maintains "open oceans" around the major continents.

Second, crossing boundaries from one active sim to another. When you cross a boundary, the servers hosting the two sims have to talk to each other, and transfer all your data from the sim you're departing to the sim you're entering. It's the time it takes for this process to occur that results in you "hitting" the sim boundary. If the transfer doesn't work correctly, you wind up with a messed-up avatar, or fifty miles underground or some such. I have no idea how to improve this process, but I agree that it should be faster, more reliable, and as invisible as possible to the traveler.

Open Ocean could probably be handled by a single server. All it has to do is keep track of peoples positions when they are away from main grid locations. It could then use a client side ocean sim hardcoded into the game and you would only see other people if they were close to your position, ie: within 512meters of you. If you find yourself within range of another person you are pased the necessary info to draw them.

When your ocean position gets within sight of land you are passed back to the main grid and you appear in one of the costal maintence sims with no more hassle than crossing a regular sim boundry. If a private Island is flaged as invisible you would not even see it as you are not tecnicaly on the main grid as you pass it's location.
