Yeah that WOULD be nice!
But please, not one of those web-only chat things. I've never seen one of those that worked very well. There ARE web interfaces to IRC that either work, or not, depending on your OS and browser, but if the server is running plane ole IRC everyone can join in however they choose. Another possibility would be to stake out a room in one of the existing IRC servers. I wouldn't be surprised if the user base is already to the point where we could maintain a round-the-clock presence in something like that. |

i know a server we could use for a SMALL group (i.e. < 50), but the administrator probably wouldn't take to kindly to an influx of 100s of users, because he pays for bandwidth usage by the gigabyte, and hundreds of people on IRC = massive b/w consumption.
our other option for now is enterthegame. i'm sitting in #secondlife when it's on... however, i think the best solution at this point would be our own server. this way, there could be separate channels for different topics (much like the forums), and people could form channels for their groups and whatnot. [edit]oh yeah, about the java client thingie. maybe offer it as an OPTION to people who don't have, don't want to download and/or can't download a real IRC client, but PLEASE do not make it the exclusive method of access to the IRC server, should you (lindens) choose to set one up for us[/edit] |

The chat room that Shebang set up has an IRC client interface. You can also use the web. It would be cool to have a server hosted by Linden, but we are getting along fine without it.

here is the relevant info for the current irc stuff.
Originally posted by Shebang Sunshine Getting ready for my RL move, and for my computer to be down until DSL is hooked up at the new place, so here's the new chat info for y'all. It's not an entire server all to ourselves, but just one room on an established server, so I made it password required to enter the room. http://irc.everywherechat.com:8000/?room=SL A box will pop up asking you for the password to enter. That password is: POG None of your nicknames are registered there -- nor do they actually *need* to be, but you can register them over there any time ya want (assuming they aren't already taken by other people) For IRC client / trillian users: /server irc.everywherechat.com 7000 Room: #SL password: POG Originally posted by Shebang Sunshine Ama (and other IRC client / trillian users) : /join #SL POG (there's a space there in between #SL and POG -- but no space between the # and SL) __________________ #! SL Chat (the password is POG) So come on over and join us. Btw, when shebang gets set up, she will host it on her own server, this is just for while she is getting all settled in. _____________________

i just talked to my friend in VA, who already runs a very stable IRC network, and he said he'd be willing to host SL permanently (or until the lindens decide to set up their own)...
the only stipulation he provided was "if they start causing a problem with the server, or the other channels..." so behave ![]() west-coast server: west.wireheadstudios.net:6667 east-coast server: east.wireheadstudios.net:6667 european server: euro.wireheadstudios.net:6667 #SL of course ![]() if you want to register a channel for your group or community or sim, just ask [WaRdeN] in #wirehead edit: you can create any channel you want by typing /join #channel where #channel is the name of the channel you want to create (must have the # prefix). if the channel already exists, you will join it. if it doesn't exist, it will be created. please remember that if everyone in an unregistered channel leaves the channel, it will disappear ![]() |
