Now that the Lindens have been gracious enough to implement many of the features we have requested, such as the trash decay and the prohibition of minors, as well as a more stable operating system, I think it's time for all of us to start asking for what we really want...which is more playing time.

Like many SL addicts, I'm on whenever possible, but unfortunately, the 7-1 est hours are really cutting into many of my "traditional" activities which includes such things as watching dvd's with my significant other, socializing with my r/l friends ("oh, so that 2nd Life is more important than hanging out with me...";), and sleeping, as I keep early hours and staying up to 1am every night is really not possible for me. Weekends are even worse, as I have oodles of free time during the day, but when night comes, I'm often doing stuff with my buddies, which means I have to wait until the next day to do stuff.

Now that many of the recent problems have been mitigated, and the new start zone created (which can have their own limited hours for the sake of the Lindens), I really don't see why we can't have, let's say 9 hours of daily in-world time...like 2 hours early, and one more hour later for the west coasters. That little bit would be a tremendous help in regaining a proper balance between my r/l and s/l.

So will all of you out there please join me in my demand for more hours:

We want more hours now!
We want more hours now! (louder, please)
We want more hours now!!!!!

OH don't I get THAT a lot!! lol
My way around this has been to play til my SO gets home and then "sleep" in SL til everyone in RL goes to bed. This isnt always something that works since I sometimes come back to the computer only to find that I crashed out. I also have missed meeting a lot of newer people that way.

If help to the newer members is of concern, may I suggest extending the hours for testers who have been playing "x" amount of time? I don't think that was the issue, but any suggestions we can put out there
;) can't hurt.

Yes it is time for me to come forward on this oh so important subject.

The More Hours subject. (ooh that just sounds nice saying!!!)

alas, I cannot ask for more hours at this time - and in truth urge Linden Lab *not* to extend the hours.

Heathen? Heritic? *sighs* I am afraid so, fellow campers.

Since the release of 4.0/4.1 I have found that the lag has doubled! Tripled at times. No longer content with lurking and attacking me in the wee hours before shutdown or at the gathering of massive amounts of compatriots , THIS monster has taken to bearding me in my *very* den!! Where before it waited for the annonimity of large crowds, now this fiend will strike in next to unpopulated areas, berift of any concealing noises, flashing lights, or chattering people!!!! Our nightmare has come true, the LAG is free!!

Ok seriously.. Dont get me wrong I think the lag is a "Good Thing". Why? Well lets say that only 30 people were on the beta test team. And they logged in everyday with no problems what-so-ever, tested for bugs, and suggested new design features. And lets say the interface got better and better, more and more what the tester's and LL wanted to see. Finally they look upon thier work and say "It is good". Go-live time is upon them. The market to the world, they sign up hunderds - thousands of eager new explorers. Those explorers load up, and log on, ready to tackle a whole new world.

And *SMASH* the server crashes, or suddenly everyone feels like their in a 6 million dollar man episode (the slower they go, the faster their machine is going).

LAG helps LL to find ways to fight against this terrible monster. To cut it off at the knee's before hundreds or thousands of new subscribers get sucked into it gaping maw. Never to be heard from again (to be found duking it out on EQ instead).

I *want* more hours, but until LL gets the connection problems resolved with the current load, I dont think we are *ready* for more hours.

Anyway. I'm sorry fellow campers for having to come out on the other side of this. I really sympathize with y'all - I just cannot in good faith make a request for something that the engine just isnt ready for when LAG is stalking us all so boldly.

As a side note - adjusting the hours might be a viable and working solution - but extending them isnt - not at this time.

I will now slink away and prepare some tar and feathers (as a good host should), so that you dont have to find your own supplies.

Hmm, lag has been a part of Second Life ever since I got on, and it got progressively worse until ver .4.1, at which time I was forced to remove SL from my system and do a clean install. Since then, lag has been less of a problem for me. Am I just an exceptional case? I still get lag, of course, but it's definately gotten better, hence my call for more hours...

I agree, the lag monster needs to be slain, or at least confined to its lair most of the time before SL goes 24/7, so I guess that's why the Lindens are forcing everyone to play during very limited hours so that they can test high-density situations.

If they can't increase the hours at the time being, how about moving the times on Sat and Sun to daytime hours so we're not forced to play at night all the time? Even that would be a big boost for me...

Consider yourself lucky, Tracey... :p :D

Ok Josh. I'm gonna give the uninstall/reinstall of 4.1 a try. See if that can clear up some of the problems.

If I can get less lag out of that, I'll change my plea - but at the rate things are now... I would almost rather not log on at all and go read a book..

At least that is only interrupted by the occasional turning of a page

Lag is not a problem. Lag goes away when you relog. Give us more hours in which we can relog. (Fix the lag buildup someday, let us create more today.)

(And if you, as a resident, can't get rid of lag by relogging, you have some other problem that needs to be fixed. )

What do we want? HOURS! When do we want them? NOW!

[Remember.... Friday morning.... 6am - sign preparation at the Embarcadero parking lot. 8am we march to Second. Plan to be there in support until at least 2pm. Bring food. Bring gas masks. Have bail prearranged.]

Ok guys, I could probably speak for the Lindens here! (Many ppl think i'ma secret Linden)

The hours will be extended when ever the grid (allt he server) are stable enough to run unattended. I wouldn't want to make poor *insert name* Linden stay until 5 am! (int he insert name probably Andrew, Phoenix, Doug, James, Richard)

The Lindens do not know when this will be possible, only time and more playing will tell. I like the hours, the Lindens are able to work on the game during the day brining us updates (I don't knwo about you... but this is the fastest growing game I have ever seen!) So when ever they are ready to extend they will!

P.S. on a little side note (insider info) I heard that they are suppose to extend the time by 2 or 4 hours (split both ways, IE 3 to 11 or 2 to 12).

Guys please be patient! PLEASE!

I would like to see extended hours myself, especially on the front end... in my first life I work a third shift job, so during the week I can normally log in only about two hours before I have to get ready and leave for work... weekends are usually pretty open for me, so the time constraints aren't too bad for me.

I feel that once the Lindens get some things worked out so that there are fewer crashes, then maybe they will add some more hours... and I will be chomping at the bit when they do add that extra time.

Hours, bug reports and lag... Oh my!
03-11-2003 13:22
Several things here, all cross-related.

First, lag.
Lots to do here, and as was noted earlier, lots thats been done. There are many reasons for slow frame rates, and each one has to be tackled independently. Our highest priority it improving the framerate, and as everyone has been kind to point out, it has improved quite a bit with the last two versions (go programmers!).

Second, Bug reports.
We have a number of them that we are looking into right now. Many thanks to those of you who took the time to send them. The process of releasing an online game usually involves a "test" period where bugs that we could not possibly have found get found and reported. This process is working well has provided a good (and humorus) list of things to fix. (go residents!).

Both of these issues contribute to the third issue:

Hours.
Nexus said it best. When we can, we absolutely will. We'd like to, but we have a few things to fix first. (see above).

It's a wonderful thing for us to see people wanting to be in world more. It's a sign that we are doing the right thing, and that you are enjoying our world. This motivates us to fix more bugs, decrease lag and.... open up more hours.

We're working on it, thanks for the kind words of encouragement.

Best Wishes,

-Linden Lab

Thanks for taking the time to respond, and to explain this to us, Peter.
