Can we pretty pretty please get a nice little checkbox to "Disable all ingame sound". By this I mean just turn the game's sound off entirely, make it no more, don't even bother with the directsound devices, etc. I can explain my reasoning in detail, but I don't think it's needed, people already know :}

Or at least a slider that doesnt effect the sound levels of everything on a person's system

I like to listen to loud music and have SL sounds lower in the background. Not possable atm. Especially when I have my sound up and I get people stopping by and bouncing around. This is really bad when I got a 1000watt sub connected to a 200watt stereo that plays my computer sounds.

Ahh so i'm not the only one.. Yes, my first encounter with this was when someone did a sonic boom sound when I had my stereo at a moderate level..

Moderately earth-shattering, was apparently more realistic according to the sound produced by my Velodyne 15" sub, i'm pretty sure I woke everyone up for about a 2 block radius.

Yes! I just ran into this yesterday when I was sending a movie to the TV while trying to stay in SL.. Needless to say, the watchers were a little annoyed when there sounds that did not belong.
Actually, thinking about it.. a way to disable sounds should also disable the sounds from downloading, and thus I won't run out of hard drive space on my system drive non-stop!!!

This was requested at least once before, and the need now is greater than ever, both as protection from noise pollution and to reduce server load.

Can't you just turn down the volume in Preferences, or does that not work right?

The problem is that the volume control in preferences just adjusts the system volume. So it works ok if SL is the only thing you are running. However if you are playing CDs or MP3s in the background then it is useless because it will turn down the volume for that too.
