I think there really needs to be some kind of "opt-out" when uploading textures.
I uploaded 4 textures which as soon as they popped up on screen looked wrong, so I deleted immediately, but it still cost me $L40
There should be something like a "confirm" button when it loads, so if you don't like the look of it, or you've accidently alphaed the wrong section and couldn't tell in photoshop, you can cancel and not waste money.

right, this would be very useful... maybe even just a "texture preview" option, client-side, where the client resizes (if necessary) the texture, and shows you how the server will store it.

Phil,
That's a great idea! The right time to stop a bad upload is _before_ the upload.
I don't know how soon we'll get to it, but I'll definitely add it to my personal features-I'd-like-to-see list.

I absolutely love this idea!
It's too bad you can't like auto preview the texture on the object/avatar you want it on as well, but I think that might be a bit too labor intensive to implement... (:

Local avatars?
05-12-2003 21:13
Excellent idea, but Alek has a point. We need to see the texture on the avatar to make the decision. Sure, a client side preview of the TGA file is useful, but without seeing it placed on the model there will still be extra uploads.
I figure the reason we get charged for uploads is to minimize traffic to the servers, so the preview needs to happen on the client side. So to see the texture on the avatar we would have to have a client-side mechanism of applying and viewing textures to 3D models. Do we? Can the SL technology render 3D objects with data from the local computer, or does the server do some of that heavy lifting?
If it can handle it, then what needs to happen is a copy of the avatar needs to be saved locally. That way the client can apply any local texture to the model and display it without additional traffic (besides the original model download). Perhaps a small fee for saving your avatar locally.
Any thoughts?

SL already renders everything locally. Previewing directly on avatars makes some sense, but it will take a good deal more work than a simple image preview.
(To do texture preview on avatars right, IMHO, it would need to be carefully integrated with the Appearance editor--since as soon as you place a texture on a shirt, for example, you'll want to tweak the shirt's sliders to match.)
