In the new user signup form, LL should put a comment next to the first name field, saying something to the effect of:
"Second Life distinguishes it's residents from each other by first and last name combined. The list of last names that new residents can choose from changes all the time, so chances are you can use a simple first name and it will not alerady be taken, so give it a try!"
I've noticed people signing up with things like "Jason6375 Appleby" and "Becky762 Medici" (both these names are fictional, hopefully), so perhaps they don't know they can use just "Jason" and "Becky" as first names?
Probably because they've tried it a few times before on various places on the internet and have given up even trying the first time. So perhaps a little notice should be given?
Also, a note to use whatever capitalization they want to be stuck with forever, suggesting the first letter be capitalized, would probably be a good thing =)

Why not simply restrict names to the usual alphabet... does anyone have an important reason for wanting to use numbers and weird symbols in their name?

I would definitly put the warning in there. I don't know about the restriction though, I don't see a good use for numbers in the name, but someone else might, I personaly don't like any restrictions. You could also auto-captalize the first letter. But once again, a restriction.

People can PICK a name, but it might be a good idea to give some examples of what others have picked. Not necessarily naming names, (though that's obviously an option) but just some examples that are similar to things that people have come up with: "Echo Omega", etc.
