So I've been watching a few proposals in the voting area for a while, and they seem to not have gotten very many votes, or much attention, either. So as a service to the proposal starters, and because it seems like forum thread == more recognition, I bring you the following proposal, to allow users to remap their controls to what they would like, as opposed to the defaults (i.e., replacing jump/fly up's default "E" with the space bar, etc.) Quoth the original starter, "Allow users to set their own keyboard controls" http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=36

Seconded and voted. http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=36As a newcomer to SL I was really surprised to find no way to customize keymappings, a fairly standard feature one has come to expect from most applications, especially when they lend themselves to heavy use of shortcuts. As a newcomer to SL who happens to use a 'non-standard' (AZERTY) keyboard, I went from surprise to frustration as I realized WASD movement was basically unusable (try moving around using QZSD to get a quick feel for it), and that preferences of the client didn't even include a menu to pick your regional keyboard. That's all for the Windows version, btw, as for some strange reason the Mac client just uses the 'right' keys for shortcuts, according to their physical placement on the keyboard regardless of regional settings (meaning on my Mac's AZERTY keyboard I can move using QZSD keys, which is nice, and I have to hit comma to switch to mouselook which is a bit confusing), while the chat will properly account for regional settings (meaning the same ',' key will output a proper ',' in chat, not a 'm'). In both cases (Mac and Windows), command shortcuts seems 'hardwired' to the keyboard physical layout (ie: ignore regional settings), except they turn out OK on the Mac and accurate-but-useless on Windows. Considering how many non-US users are present in SL, and the apparent eagerness to reach for an international userbase, I find this oversight beyond weird, and from a cursory look at the forums I can see the issue raised as far back as 2004. Offering a complete customizable shortcut table in the preferences of the client (or at least an editable conf file), and bundle a set of templates for common keyboard layouts would go a long way towards improving usability.

I have never seen such a perfect fkup of a brilliant keyboard setup in my life,
The idiot who decided to take the users interface out of the users control should be made to build a 200 prim object with this insane keyboard combination.

You mean like I do, using alt-[arrow keys] to move the camera?
Either way, I'm happy with a custom layout thing because then I can have my arrow keys move and your WASD people can be weird and use those (I've always been using the arrow keys and HATE wasd with a passion (and ijkl, but that's just wasd on the other side of the keyboard)).
