After a month of Second-Lifing, I decided i enjoyed it enough to upgrade to premium and get some land so I could build a little house. I was encouraged by every Second-Lifer I came across, because everyone says that's one of the most interesting parts of being a SL member. So, I upgraded.

I should have done my homework BEFORE upgrading. To my dismay, the "First Land" program was discontinued a few weeks ago due to misuse, and now new users with good intentions get nothing for upgrading.

So I ask you, WHY bother to upgrade? I can't afford to spend $2000 US dollars on a video game piece of land.

You can't undo what's already been done by those who took advantage of the deal, but you can make it possible for new users to still get "First Land", and I have two possible solutions.

1) Make it impossible to sell the "First Land" for at least one-two years after membership upgrade

or

2) Make it impossible to sell the "First Land" at all. If someone cancels their membership, the land can revert back to SL for resale or re-issuance to other new users.

So, I upgraded and then downgraded within just a few hours of each other. I wonder if I'll get my $9.95 back.

Nope, I don't think so. You may also have to pay $9.95 more to down grade.

It you go to an auction you may be able to buy much cheaper. I think the going rate is L$276 for $1.00 USD. If you watch and bid carefully, you may be able to get a small piece of land for under L$100,000. That is something I cannot afford either.

All of my friends were able to get first land. Not me....

Unfortunatly the best they can do is to try to bring land prices down so more people can afford to own land. Now whether the land barons allow this to happen or not is another question. Patience is the rule of thumb here. Land prices have been alot lower in the past and can be again if people refuse to pay these current prices for it. Also beware the auctions. The winner typically pays alot more than necessary.

IF LL waanted to contnue the First land program in any form, the only real way would be to give a random 512 when the member upgrades and ban the resale of that plot for a term amount of time, say 3 months.

US$2000???? Either you typo'ed out a . or you still have some more reading to do.

First Land got you 512m2 for L$512. You can find plenty of 512m2 lots for under L$7000, which is about US$25.

really. hmmmm.... i am pretty new, and don't know where to find this information. i'll keep looking... now that i've got a downgrade pending. LOL

2L has a lot of FAQ's, but none seems to fully answer my concerns... ever. And that was not a typo. On the 2L auction area, they were selling land in both US and L form, and and i couldn't believe my eyes. thank you all for your replies. i will read more and listen more.

The auction prices are for land bought direct from LL, which only seems to be available in large parcels.

Use the land sales tab on the search window to look for land being sold by other residents. You should be able to get a 512 for well under L$10,000.

Or if you don't want to stay premium, look at renting.

Those prices are usually for full regions - that's 65,536m2 of land. First Land was a special deal for residents to get their first small chunk of land cheap - it's was 512m2 of land (1/128th of a region) for L$512. That's it, nothing else..

Look in 'search' and then 'land' - type in your area and price parameters and choose the 'mainland' option. 512m plots come as cheap as around 6500L$, or you could get a useable 256m plot for half that - enough to put a small chalet and a few small trees! 512m plots allow, I think, 117 prims, enough for a simple house with spare primmage for furniture etc.

I've found premium membership worthwhile for the creative value of having a permanent home designed and built by MEEEE!
