Please excuse me if this has already been suggested by someone else.
Quite simply, prims or sculpties (though it'd probably work better with sculpties) that can be rigged to a skeleton and deform with it. Example of use; A sculpty ponytail rigged to it's own set of bones (rather then being made out of numerous single prims with visible seams at the joints).

This is already in the works thanks to various efforts, and is already available if you can stand to compile the code yourself. I don't know if any 3rd party viewers have it in yet (as the implementation may not be finalised). See this JIRA for details: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9203
