Ok, I know it's not even "supported" yet, but here's what I'd like to see happen..
A movie control panel with start - stop and pause buttons on it. When it's first brought up you can choose the codec (last one you used should already be selected) and toggle on/off the UI. Ok yes, I do see a problem with my suggestion already -- if you toggle off the UI, then the movie control panel would go away... would someone who has more caffeine in their system than I currently have in mine please step in here and suggest a way for what I'm thinking to work?
[ Also -- are there any freeware video editors anywhere? Something that can at least cut portions out of an avi/mov/mpeg? ]

VirtualDub is released under GNU license...I don't think it handles MPEG, but it does do AVI's and definately has enough power to cut hunks out (along with some basic editing/processing commands). http://www.virtualdub.org/

Shebang, have you tried making movies in SL yet? We basically put it exactly that feature, but it's in debug menu right now.
Very serviceable movie editor is Windows Movie Maker 2.0, which is avail for free at download.com and I beelieve comes with later versions of XP.

Philip, Yes, I made a movie the very first day it was available. Nine seconds uncompressed == 128mb! =) Choosing a codec is confusing -- I've seen a reference (I believe it was Peter who posted) to choose mpeg 4, but that's not in my list of choices. (I did download/install the 9.x codec before attempting that first movie). What I was asking for, and didn't do a very good job of explaining, is that after the codec is selected: There would be a tiny gui window with Stop & Start buttons (believe it or not, I really am a keyboard shortcut freak, but for some reason I can't ever remember the kbsc for stopping/starting the movie -- plus there isn't any visual clue to say "hey dork, you're still recording here!" . Also, I really wish the codec chooser window would remember the last codec selected so I don't have to try to remember which one I used that actually worked for me. Yeah, I'm lazy =) Thanks for the pointer to "Windows Movie Maker" -- going to download it and give it a whirl later today. #!

Yes if you have XP you likely already have Movie Maker...if you don't see it, and have the XP install disc, I believe you can add it. I actually worked on the release campaign for XP and one of our big demos was movie maker (which actually is great...but having to use Windows Media Player was trying, that damn thing is so buggy, they just can't get the visualization code stable). And if you don't have the install CD... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsXP/moviemaker/downloads/moviemaker2.aspFun fun.

No, it won't run on Win2K. The entire media subsystem was rewritten on XP. But...there is a kit that allows you to chop up media on Win2k and edit files, I just forget what it's called and where to get it. Let me dig some, I'll find it. I used to use it all the time when I was doing media library conversions and adding scripts to real-time media (actually a very elegant feature of Windows media 7+).
Yes I'm proud. Thank you for not cluttering the thread and adding scrolling/pages for naught.
