Linden Lab would have to build a completely new Second Life if they wanted to use the new Crytek engine. Then by the time they had finished building the new Second Life, there'll be posts in the forums asking why they don't use the new Cry Engine 3. :)

Basically, they can't just switch their 3D engine for a new one. It's not that modular. Second Life is proof of Stephen Hawking's string theory.
