Instead of the sim simply vanishing and being replaced with ocean, why not replace it with a gigantic hole seared into the grid with lava flowing 200-300m down, since obviously the orbital laser misfired at full power somehow...

Wonderful idea!
Maybe put some sort of demons streaming out? Or "fake" AVs being distorted and pulled in?
Or maybe we can go there and toast marshmallows while floating above it?
This could be fun.
