A couple of incidents have been reported already of peple being harassed due to the group affiliations. Sadly, perhaps the ability to hide our groups in our profiles may be helpful to spare some grief. Either hide them all or select which ones you don't want to show.

Group owners have the ability to hide a group from search and everyone's profile (officers or other roles may be able to as well depending on the assigned abilities).

Being able to hide a group membership from your own profile, but not have it apply to the group as a whole would only give a false sense of obscurity since anyone could still get the member list for a public group (depending on the group settings), or join the group and extract the member list that way.

Adding both "Invisible to group members" and "Can see invisible members" as group options would solve the problem in a sane way.

Anyone who's in a role that has "Invisible" checked will not have the group show up in their profile, and neither would they appear in the member list (does not apply to owners). The only disclosure in that case would come from group chat.

I would also love to be able to choose to hide all or some of my groups from prying eyes - I have groups for my business - but why should I have to announce to the world where I play? ever heard of those weirdos who follow you around - why should we make it easier for them??

I have also been harrased by people who were 'profile surfing' and didnt agree with my groups - and also because they had an argument with a person in a club - they started to IM everyone in the group - - I dont want other peoples drama RL has enough of those thanks

I support this proposal from Brenda, and I think I like Kitty's suggestions on details.

Although not needed for me personal... I can see for others the need for this. I think it is a good one.

Probably not a bad idea.

I was just looking at the various groups I now find myself belonging to and while I can't for the life of me see anything that would cause immediate concern, who knows what lurks out there. One of the things that attracts me to SL is that we treat each other better here than we do out there in RL. But unfortunately there are some very judgemental people and they have found their way into SL and they continue to discriminate against people who are different from themselves. The world would be a whole lot better and safer if we would just accept people for who they are.

With that in mind, I support Brenda's suggestion.
