I could be mistaken (as it's been a long time), but I think they had this capability in Alpha Worlds.
I'd like to see some kind of way to let us rasterize text onto a face of a prim, or create a new "sign" prim which defaults to a thin rectangular prim which displays this text on both sides (with settable foreground text color and background texture/color).
This would create low overhead for the clients, if the text, color, and size information itself were transferred instead of a "baked" texture.
I don't see this as being eagarly wanted or anticipated, but might be something useful to look into at a low priority if it's easy to implement.

I'll weigh in as one who would want to see this implemented. Generic, customizable signage might not be the most attractive object to rez - but it would save a lot of notecards and texture uploads. (And provide a cheap venue for signage puns...) An idea here would be the additional ability to specify the "back" texture for the sign, which would help forestall the ugly factor . =SV
