Pressing Control D duplicates an object at some offset in the x and y directions.

Wouldn't it be just peachy keen if we could determine the values of those offsets, and toss in the z axis as well, while we're being rational.

The we could make walls by setting the offsets, selecting a wall section and pressing Ctrl D till our fingers wore out, or till the wall was as long as we wanted, why the heck not?

A Wonderful Idea

This would be such an easy way to make building easier. Most likely no one realizes just how much benefit this would yield because no one uses Control D the way it is now.

Great suggestion. I've been wanting this feature since day 1, but I never posted it. I'm glad someone finally did (not sure why I didn't). What you are suggesting is the way duplicate works in most other 3D programs. In Maya for example, there's an otions box to set the values for tranlate (move distance), rotate, scale, and number of times to repeat the duplication. Once you set those, then every time you hit duplicate, the duplicated objects rez already where you want them, already the right size, at the right angle, etc.

I agree with you that the unchangeable ofsset now in place (.05 on X & Y) is pretty silly. The function will only become practical if and when we are able to control the offset (rotation, scale, and repeat would be nice too).

That having been said though, I'd much rather the current bugs be fixed before any Linden attention is given to improving ctrl-D. SL is perfectly usable whether ctrl-D is in play or not (shift drag works easily enough), but it is not perfectly usable when my camera all of a sudden warps 10 meters away and faces the other direction simply because I moved an object I was looking at closely. Neither is it perfectly usable when my display now freezes 2 or 3 times a day just like it used to do over a year ago (thought that went out with like 1.3 but now it's back). I'll take or leave ctrl-D gladly, along with a gazillion other features if these annoyances can be dealt with. Okay, enough venting for now.

Two years and still waiting.

It's been a bit over two years since I made this feature suggestion, and I am still wanting it.

I have a Jira proposal for this now.

I have added the Z axis in to the Jira proposal.

The Jira proposal (New Feature Issue, in jiraspeak) is at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-677 .

I think most folks find its good to login to jiro first, then click on a link like the one above.

I see two approaches to this.

Firstly, really need to think a little bigger about this and none of this would matter if we had a reliable cheap off line object editing facility with import/export facilities. Maybe Blender or similar program.

Alternatively, if we want to persist with the current system, enthuse the open source viewer developing community to take this up.

There've been numerous suggestions regarding importing meshes and offline build editors. Those who support such ideas would be better served to find one of those threads and support those ideas there, or find a new feature issue at jira.secondlife.com and vote for it, or log in to jira and create a new feature issue of their own, rather than to make comments in a thread on an unrelated idea such as this one this thread is about.

This thread has a suggestion which could add considerable value for builders while being relatively easy to implement by the programmer.

If user selectable offsets for Control D copying is indeed something that can done solely on the viewer side of things, this idea might be good one for an open source developer to explore and perhaps submit as a patch.

Once again, to vote for this idea in jira, just log in to jira at jira.secondlife.com and then take this link: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-677 .

I'd like this too. As Chosen Few notes in the thread, Maya has things like rotate as well.

This could be implemented as simply as adding an extra tab/button to the edit window for a duplicate tool where you can enter the offset and rotation to apply to the copy created and sticking a big "Duplicate" button on it to duplicate the current selection, highlighting on the same page that you can use Ctrl-D as a shortcut. I didn't even know we could USE control-D (or command-D in my case) to do this!
