is it possible for SL to run smoothly as in at least 30 fps with average detail in an environment with an above average amount of objects and animations running?

if anyone has SL running smoothly at 800x600 or greater, please post your computer specs.

I average around 120fps

Dual Opteron 244
8GB DDR PC4000
nVidia GeForce 6800GT

This is at 1800x1440 with all settings at max (except anistropic filtering which is off, no antialiasing either.)

That's insane. Just curious, why is Anisotropic Filtering and Antialiasing not on? :D

But presumably you two hi-speed people still have stuff rezzing slowly around you when you tp in, or move quickly ?

That being purely a function of the link speed?

Or once you have the computer power, are you then able to take full advantage of a faster link?

I wonder what determines how fast SL will serve the stuff to you ? Is the bandwidth shared equally between competing user demands, regardless of their link speed, or do faster links get more, maybe as a proportion of their speed capability?

In other words, once your computer is fast enough, is the next step to upgrade your link to above, say, 2MB/s? Or is there no benefit to be had ?

Anybody know ? We need this sort of info to decide where to concentrate to get better performance.

Jeez..at that resolution, how the heck do you ever read the text??

I run a 6800GT OC, but think I'm only running SL at about 1024 x 768, or maybe 12?? x 10??. Any higher and things get damn tiny. But maybe it's my old eyes...or you have a huge monitor.

He's probably got a 27" or larger monitor.

Yeah, I'm curious actually, for all practical intents and purposes (but moreso on the "purposes" part), what kind of peak download speeds can be obtained from SL? I have heard of quite a few who have *phat* bandwidth pipes but can only get 60 kilobytes/sec (that's 60K/sec) incoming. Is there some sort of limiter at the other end?

What's your draw distance set to?

I'd love to be able to set it to max (512) and fun fullscreen at and speed over 15fps (feels smooth enough to me). Maybe when I next upgrade my PC :)

I have a desktop and a laptop both of which run SL very happily (even on a Wireless LAN)... The common factors are:

- a recent, high spec graphics card (ATI 9800XT/9700Mobility) with the latest drivers
- 1Gb of fast, high quality, system RAM (I personally use Corsair XMS).

I've noticed that people tend not to realize that system memory can often have the greatest single impact on improving system performance, and skimp on memory when purchasing their system in favor of some scanner that they never use...

Oh the screen resolutions are 1600x1200 and 1400x1050.

Draw distances anyone? Do you even know you can change the draw distance? Just wondering cos people seem to play with the other options but people never seem to mention draw distance. It makes a huge difference both to rendering speed (negative) and appearance of the world (positive).

While I'm here I'll mention again that you should increase the "fog ratio" setting to 1.6 or 1.8 if you want SL to stop looking like a smoggy day in L.A. That setting doesn't change the speed, it just changes the amount of fog that SL uses to obscure all the stuff it spent so long drawing.

I doubt you'd like it, I have all the details cranked down to nothing and the Draw distance maxed and I lag horribly.

My draw distance is 64, and I have absolutely no performance options on, exept for land detail. No shiny, local lighting or anything. I average 15-20 FPS. Back in 1.5, I had 7 fps, but then I installed Memturbo. Memturbo is possibly the single greatest performance program on the face of the planet Earth. It jumped my FPS in 1.5 from 7to 60. And that day, I had fun. Trust me, being able to ride a motorcycle w/ a tweaked top speed of 250 around an empty sandbox is incredible.

Adam, what minimum FPS do you get? Have you tested what FPS you get with anistropic and antialiasing on?

Depends on where I am. Welcome Area I usualy get about 10 fps if I'm lucky (5 on average). Anywhere else I'll get about 13-15 fps usualy. And in a really sparse sim I'll get a great deal more.

I run with most settings on, except for Shadows since that crashes the client (BOOO). And with draw distance at 64 or 90 or whatever, (lowest or second lowest setting) usualy.

P4 3ghz
3 gigs memory
ATI Radeon 9800 128mb
3 mbps ADSL (I think)

depends alot on whats going on.. 30 agents in sim and even adam's dual rig will prolly push 10 fps, tops... floating up in a skybox with a low draw distance my mac mini can do 40+ fps... it really depends on yer settings, and your surroundings..

i would say with a good system you will probably be around 20 fps for most of SL

If I had my draw distance at 64 SL would suck. You can barely see in front of your face like that. What is the point? I keep my draw at 96 or 128, and I turn it to 160 for pictures.
