There is a process that may work if the auto-updater crashes on you and gives you a funny message like: ef95f380-9adf-d4fb-ac5a-838a2984eac1.tmp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Try this - Make sure SL is closed.
- Delete the files in the following folder (or a similar directory path)
C:\Documents and Settings\(YOURUSERNAME)\Local Settings\Temp
- Uninstall and reinstall the older (1.6.7) version of SL. Hopefully you still have the previous installer around. If not, remember to try this in the future.
- Start SL and see what happens.
If this "reset" doesn't work for you, please post in Technical Issues /111/1.html and please do it on a thread that's already been started with the same issue as to avoid duplicate threads. It, along with other observations you may have, will help narrow down what might be going on. Finally, a reminder that you can always download the latest version of SL here http://secondlife.com/download/Thanks!

How about LL just FIXING this bug in the first place? I've had this happen numerous times--even after reinstalling SL; the next build just caused it to happen yet again. It's futile...

The trouble is that the auto updater doesn't work when there is a proxy used.

Why not? I use Proxomitron and the updater has worked with it before, but then gets messed up and doesn't work again until I uninstall/reinstall SL. Other updaters work FINE with my proxy server so it's obviously bad SL coding...

 I totaly agree with you on this. I use proxomitron too. Little script i cooked up for the wiki URL: secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=
Match: $URL((http(s|)://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php\?wakka=[^/%]+)\1) :: (You|Owner)\2
Replace: :: <a href="\1/../../actions/backlinks">Backlinks</a> :: \2

Once a person has uninstalled 1.6.7, there's no point in reinstalling it. Just go to the website and download the 1.6.8 installer. It's not a bad idea to delete both the Secondlife directories and execute a fresh install every update. Be sure to back up your photos and remember to apply your preferances. Yeah those first time pop up boxes are slightly annoying; but you'll be up and playing, rather than bughunting.
